Curator’s statement
Fans of Champagne, take note! Over the past few decades, English winegrowers and wine enthusiasts have realized climate change is creating prime growing conditions for Champagne varietals, namely Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Pinot Meunier. Now, England, Kent and Sussex in particular are establishing themselves as sparkling wine powerhouses. In addition to the amazing wines coming out of this area, the scenery and history of Southern England make it well worth a visit.

Things to do in England
Seven Sisters Cliffs
This stunning series of chalky sea cliffs lies on the coast of the English Channel. Take a boat tour or hike along the downs and enjoy the sparkling blue waters and the local wildlife. Keep an eye out for kittiwakes! These cliffs are one of the few areas in the world where the kittiwake, a bird similar to a seagull, nests.
Spend the day in Arundel
Immerse yourself in history and architecture with a tour of one of England’s best-preserved castles: Arundel Castle. After the tour, spend a few hours in the town center enjoying the shops, art galleries, food, and wine. I loved Digby Fine English for a sparkling wine break.
Tour and taste at local wineries
Between Sussex and Kent, there are approximately 200 active wineries. From small wineries that advise visitors to walk to their tasting, to large, Napa-like estates, there is a winery for every kind of wine lover. Most of these wineries offer tours, tastings, and food pairings daily.
Places to eat & drink in England
The Royal, St Leonard’s on Sea
This may look like another typical British pub, but it is not to be missed. Get a seat facing the train station for great people watching, or grab a table in the lively, yet intimate, dining room. Make sure to order the bread and butter – it is truly memorable!
Flint House, Brighton & Hove
This chic, hidden-in-plain-sight brasserie is located in a trendy, pedestrian-friendly area of Brighton. It’s a great place to pop in for a late afternoon cocktail or to enjoy small plates and wine after a day of exploring the area.
Cockburn’s Tea Rooms, Arundel
Arundel was an unexpected surprise when visiting the area. In addition to the impressive castle, this picturesque little town is home to a number of great restaurants. Make sure to visit Cockburn’s Tea Rooms for a traditional afternoon tea experience. Don’t miss the scones; they are a highlight.
Nutbourne Vineyards
Try the perfect Bacchus wine in Nutbourne. This cool-climate, white grape is a cross between Riesling-Silvaner and Müller-Thurgau. It thrives in England and often produces high-acid wines with floral aromas.
Gusbourne Estate
Gusbourne is home to a variety of indulgent English sparkling wines, England’s answer to Champagne. They are using the exact same soil and grapes and are increasingly experiencing the same or better, climate conditions as Champagne. Expect brightness and notes of tart apple and brioche.
