Day 1: Arrive in Breckenridge

Two people in gear and ready to ski.

After you make your way there from the Denver airport, you will want to secure all your rental gear you will need for your trip. It is best to do this on the day you get in versus waiting until the next morning because the wait times at the rental shops can be hefty depending on the time of day.

If you are coming from a lower elevation location, you may want to plan to carve out some time to hit up an oxygen bar and focus on being really hydrated to combat the possibility of getting altitude sickness. This is something my family and I wish we knew seeing as we all got altitude sickness upon arrival and missed out on some days of skiing to stay locked in our lodgings recovering.

It is probably a great time to explore the independently-owned shops and restaurants since you will already be downtown picking up your rental gear and being at the oxygen bar.

But you may be tired from your travels and ready to head back to your lodgings and enjoy an evening in the hot tub or at a spa if your lodgings have those accommodations.

Day 2: Hit the Breckenridge slopes

A line of people waiting on the ski slopes.

This will be your first full day of checking out Breckenridge Resort. It is better to get there in the morning when the resort opens, especially if you are driving because the parking lots fill up fast, and it is a small city so it can get congested on the roads very quickly.

If you are wanting to avoid the city traffic in the car as much as possible, I would head to the slopes first thing, and leave about an hour before the resort closes. If that is not a factor for you, then you won’t have to worry about this tip.

There are multiple busses that will transport you to all the different ski slopes. There are trail maps that you can look up online to help you get on the correct bus and if you are unsure, you can always as the driver and they will help you get where you need to go, or you can check out the trail map.

Day 3: Explore downtown Breckenridge

Streets are filled with snow at Downtown Breckenridge.

Breckenridge during the holiday is full of unique and beautiful events to partake in apart from hitting the slopes. There is the lighting of Breckenridge and the racing of the Santas, Ullr Fest, New Year’s Eve torchlight and the Glowworm Parade to name a few.

Check out their holiday schedule.

Day 4: Take a day trip to Keystone Resort

Snow capped Rockies with groomed ski slopes in the foreground.

Since you are so close to the Keystone resort and if the weather permits the trip, I recommend you take a drive to Keystone for a day of skiing or snowboarding the slopes. Keystone is known for its expansive terrain, including three peaks and a wide variety of runs. It’s particularly renowned for its night skiing, which operates on select runs.

The resort caters to families with its Kidtopia program, which features events and activities designed for children. Despite it being more family friendly, Keystone also has several terrain parks, making it popular among freestyle skiers and snowboarders.

You can grab food at the very top of the mountain at the Summit House. It has a variety of small eats and drinks to fill you up during your adventures up and down the resort.

Keystones night skiing is very popular, and it may not be something you want to miss if you have the opportunity and energy to ski day into night.

This was my favorite ski resort I visited during my stay in Breckenridge for the holidays!

Day 5: Say farewell

This may be your last day in Breckenridge and it will probably consist of grabbing breakfast for the last time, returning your rental gear and checking out of your lodgings to start your trip back to the airport.

Need to know

Prior to making it to Colorado, make sure you look into the ski passes available at all the ski resorts you are planning to visit. They normally have different pricing options for multiple day passes and veterans and military rates. All active-duty military members also have access to discounted Epic Passes which cover the lift tickets at these resorts if you select the correct option. Epic Passes also include buddy tickets and "ski with a friend tickets" that may be useful to you.
