Curator’s statement

Alentejo is a unique region in Portugal - its golden air, warm days and blue skies are pretty outstanding. For sure, less known than Lisbon, Porto or Algarve, Alentejo is full of slowness, tradition and authenticity. Also, due to its weather, Alentejo has some of the best wine from Portugal, in a totally different landscape when compared to Douro. Prepare yourself for a full immersion in golden wheat fields, cork oak forests and the distinctive whitewashed houses with blue or yellow accents.

Things to do in Alentejo

A serene landscape with a clear sky, scattered clouds, and a row of trees on the horizon.

Alentejo has a vast area, and it's marked by several vineyards, each one with its own uniqueness and tradition. Due to its predominantly Mediterranean climate - hot, dry and sunny, with large continental influence, Alentejo gathers key attributes for the best grape varieties. The landscape is made up of wide plains and hills, with a predominance of clay, granite, limestone and schist soil.

In Alentejo, there are numerous grape varieties planted - some that can be mentioned:

  • White varieties: Arinto, Roupeiro or Antão Vaz

  • Red grape varieties: Trincadeira, Alicante Bouschet, Aragonez or Castelão

Having the above in mind, we can say that white wines are smooth, fresh, aromatic and with an aroma of tropical fruits, while red wines are commonly intense, full-bodied, rich in tannins and with an aroma of wild berries and red fruits.

In the list below, you can find some of the best vineyards or wineries - prepare yourself to emerge in the interior, "knowing" unknown places and discovering some of the best hidden gems:

Herdade do Freixo

Located in Redondo, and known for its stunning underground winery, Herdade do Freixo is a must-visit for architecture and wine enthusiasts alike. The estate produces high-quality wines that reflect the unique terroir of the region - you can take a walk around and have a wine tasting moment. There is also a chance to rent the space for weddings or corporate events.

  • Signature Wines: Freixo Family Collection, Freixo Reserva

Fita Preta

Located in Nossa Senhora da Graça do Divor, near Évora, this is quite unique - a totally innovative winery founded by António Maçanita and David Booth, known for its modern approach and terroir-driven wines. Located at the historic Paço do Morgado de Oliveira estate. Offers tours, tastings and events in its magnificent place.

  • Signature Wines: Fita Preta Tinto, Fita Preta Branco, Preta, Sexy Wines

Herdade do Esporão

Located near Reguengos de Monsaraz, this is one of the most famous wineries in Alentejo. Herdade do Esporão has a long history dating back to the 13th century. It is known for its commitment to sustainable practices and for producing high-quality wines as well as olive oils. The estate offers guided tours, tastings and a gourmet restaurant (with a Michelin star!) with stunning views of the vineyards.

  • Signature Wines: Esporão Reserva, Monte Velho (the cheapest one, still great price-quality, now with an Organic edition)

Herdade das Servas

Located in Estremoz, this is one of the oldest wineries in the region. Herdade das Servas is known for its dedication to tradition and quality, and that is notable from the road until the moment you leave the place. The estate offers a rich historical experience with comprehensive tours, tastings and a deep dive into the heritage of Alentejo winemaking.

  • Signature Wines: Herdade das Servas Reserva, Monte das Servas.

Quinta do Quetzal

Located in Vidigueira, this place is a bit different from the remaining since it is also a cultural experience, with a proper art gallery. This modern estate combines art, architecture and winemaking. The estate features an art center, a gourmet restaurant and panoramic views over the vineyards.

  • Signature Wines: Quetzal Reserva, Guadalupe

Monte da Ravasqueira

Located in Arraiolos, Monte da Ravasqueira is a family-owned estate known for its extensive vineyards, beautiful landscape and traditional winemaking. The winery offers a comprehensive experience that includes vineyard tours, tastings and visits to their unique carriage museum. It is also an opportunity to see a traditional property from Alentejo.

  • Signature Wines: Vinha das Romas, Monte da Ravasqueira Reserva, MR Premium.

Adega Mayor

Located in Campo Maior, led by one of our most estimated personalities, Rui Nabeiro, who died recently. Designed by renowned architect Álvaro Siza Vieira, Adega Mayor is as much an architectural landmark as it is a winery. The estate offers a blend of modern winemaking techniques and stunning design, with panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. Visitors can enjoy guided tours, tastings and a deep dive into their wine portfolio. In addition, you can also take a look at Adega Mayor olive oils and vinegar as well as the new line from Biocosmestica.

  • Signature Wines: Adega Mayor Reserva do Comendador, Adega Mayor Touriga Nacional

Places to eat & drink in Alentejo

An outdoor patio area with tables and chairs, surrounded by buildings and greenery under a clear sky.

Lunch or dinner in a winery:

  • Herdade do Esporão - Reguengos de Monsaraz: As mentioned above, this restaurant offers a farm-to-table dining experience with a modern twist on traditional Alentejo cuisine. The menu changes seasonally, with dishes made from ingredients grown on the estate or sourced locally - it has just received a Michelin Star and a Michelin Green Star, again.

  • São Lourenço do Barrocal - Monsaraz: Part of the luxury São Lourenço do Barrocal estate - I've also added this one as a great place to stay - this restaurant offers refined Alentejo cuisine in a stunning setting. The farm-to-table philosophy is central to the dining experience, with many ingredients sourced from the estate's organic garden.

  • Herdade das Servas - Estremoz: As mentioned above, Herdade das Servas also has a great restaurante, called Legacy. This is set in a typical Alentejo landscape and surrounded by vineyards, ideal for those who like good food and wine and gastronomic experiences that can be enjoyed without haste, from a slow-living perspective. It has two menus, a main menu – where the dishes are created with the wines in mind – and an after-hours menu, made up of snacks and delicacies to share.

Lunch or dinner elsewhere:

  • Tua Madre - Évora: A special place where an interesting project was developed, that mixes Italian food with typical food from Alentejo. Be prepared for an unique experience paired with some great organic/ exclusive wines.

  • Cavalariça Évora - Évora: Cavalariça Évora sits inside the Palácio de Cadaval, just steps from the Templo Romano Évora and serves Alentejo specialties in a nice, modern environment. The menu is mainly for sharing so, be prepared to taste a lot of delicious plates.

  • Mercearia /Restaurante Casa do Gadanha - Estremoz: A charming spot that combines a gourmet grocery store with a restaurant. The food is creative yet rooted in traditional Alentejo flavors. Don't miss their tapas and wine selection.

  • O Alpendre - Arraiolos: This is a great spot to enjoy traditional Alentejo dishes in a cozy, rustic setting - don't expect a fancy experience. The restaurant is known for its hearty portions and friendly atmosphere, with amazing local food.
