Things to do in Yellowstone National Park
Walk among the springs and the geysers
One of Yellowstone’s most iconic features, there is an incredible variety of springs and geysers to explore. Most of these are easily accessible by boardwalk, and allow for a leisurely, family-friendly stroll through these natural wonders. Of course, you can’t miss watching Old Faithful erupt. Eruption times are relatively predictable and a schedule can be found at the visitor center. Additionally, plan for stops at the upper, mid, and lower basin geyser boardwalk as well as the boardwalk at West Thumb
Hiking
There is no shortage of hikes in Yellowstone National Park. Among the “must-sees” is a hike along the Fairy Falls Trail. An easy out-and-back trail with a bit of elevation at the end, and you are treated with an incredible view of Grand Prismatic Springs. Park at Fairy Falls Trailhead for this one.
Another highly recommended hike is to the Lower Falls Overlook at Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. This one is more strenuous, dropping 600 feet of elevation in about 0.5 miles, but you get to see the magnificent lower falls up close!
Take a Scenic Drive
Arguably the highlight of a trip to Yellowstone, a scenic drive through the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone is a must! There are two scenic loops, the North Rim and the South Rim. Both are worth a drive and offer breath-taking views of Upper and Lower Falls.
Search for Wildlife
Black bears, grizzly bears, wolves, elk and bison all call Yellowstone home, and odds are you will see some, if not all of these animals during a visit. Bring a pair of binoculars and a little patience and you are in for a treat! Lamar and Hayden valleys are your best bet for sighting wildlife. Try to go at dawn or dusk if you can for the best chance to spot wildlife.
Water Adventure
There are numerous options for rafting, kayaking, boating and swimming within the park.
Horseback Riding
What better way to explore Yellowstone than by horseback? There are a variety of guided horseback tours within and nearby the park.
