Advisor - Hydra: Where Time Slows Down
Curator’s statement

Hydra has been steadily growing in popularity over the years, and it's easy to see why. Just a two-hour ferry ride from Athens, this island is rich in history and charm. Famous figures like the Kennedys vacationed here, Leonard Cohen had a home on the island and the classic film "Boy on a Dolphin," starring Sophia Loren, was shot on its stunning shores. What sets Hydra apart is its unique lack of cars — donkeys remain the main mode of transportation, as the island's narrow, cobblestone streets were designed to preserve its natural beauty, making it a peaceful and serene destination. Whether you’re visiting for a day or staying overnight, Hydra offers a variety of transportation options, from boat taxis and ferries to walking and, of course, donkeys. For those interested in a quick getaway, there are several tours that depart from Athens, taking you through Poros, Hydra and back to Athens all in one day.

Things to do in Hydra

Hop on a boat taxi and explore one of Hydra’s neighboring beaches — whether you prefer an organized beach with amenities or a more secluded spot, be sure to come prepared for the day. The island also offers a variety of hiking trails, making it possible to hike across Hydra in a day and enjoy its stunning landscapes. If you're a fan of history, there's a fascinating museum to visit as well.

For a more relaxed experience, head to the public entrance by Sunset Restaurant, where many locals enjoy sunbathing or taking a refreshing dip in the sea. It's also a perfect spot to watch the sunset or enjoy an evening swim. And when you're ready to shop, you’ll find charming boutiques and art galleries lining the port, offering a delightful mix of local treasures and beautiful artwork.

Omilos is a well-known waterfront restaurant offering stunning views of the port. It's a perfect blend of traditional Greek cuisine with a modern twist. The ambiance is relaxed yet elegant, making it ideal for both casual meals and special occasions. With fresh seafood, locally sourced ingredients and a variety of Mediterranean dishes, Omilos is a top choice for anyone looking to enjoy high-quality food by the water.

Sunset Restaurant is another popular spot, situated just by the sea with a perfect view of the sun setting over the Aegean. Many locals and visitors alike flock here to enjoy its laid-back atmosphere. The menu offers a selection of traditional Greek dishes, with an emphasis on fresh seafood and locally grown produce. It’s a great place for a leisurely meal as you watch the sky turn vibrant colors at dusk, making it an unforgettable dining experience.

Techne offers a more artistic dining experience with a unique blend of Greek and contemporary cuisine. Known for its creative menu, Techne combines fresh ingredients with a modern culinary approach. The setting is stylish and intimate, with artful decor that matches the restaurant's name, which means "art" in Greek. Whether you're enjoying a delicious dinner or a glass of wine, Techne offers an inviting space for those looking for something a bit different from the usual Greek tavernas.

Need to know

If you're torn between spending another full day in Athens or island hopping, I highly recommend considering a day trip or an overnight stay in Hydra. This charming island is often underrated but offers the perfect blend of relaxation and beauty, making it an ideal spot to unwind and soak in the soothing sounds of summer in Greece.
