Things to do in Montepulciano

Exploring the Medieval Town:

Strolling through the medieval streets, I marveled at the well-preserved buildings that date back to the Renaissance. The main thoroughfare, Via del Teatro, is lined with quaint shops and delis, each offering local delicacies. The Palazzo Comunale stood out as a significant landmark, reminiscent of Florence's Palazzo Vecchio, and is a perfect example of Gothic architecture.

Key highlights included:

  • Piazza Grande: This grand square is the heart of Montepulciano, surrounded by majestic buildings such as the Town Hall and the Cathedral. It is an excellent spot for taking photos and soaking in the ambiance.

  • Basilica di Santa Maria Assunta: This stunning church is a must-visit. Built in the 16th century, its compelling architecture and beautiful artworks captured my attention. Inside, the intricate altars and serene atmosphere make it a noteworthy stop during any visit to the town.

Touring the Ercolani Cellars and underground city:

One of the trip's highlights was touring the Ercolani cellars. This extensive winery offers visitors a glimpse into the rich tradition of winemaking in the region. The cellars are impressively carved into the ancient tuff stone, creating a cool, dark environment ideal for aging wine.

The tour included:

  • Insight into the winemaking process: Knowledgeable staff walked us through the entire process, from grape selection to fermentation and aging. Tasting some of the renowned Vino Nobile di Montepulciano was a delightful experience.

  • Exploration of the underground city: The cellars are not just about wine — they form part of an extensive underground network beneath Montepulciano. The guided tour showcased ancient Etruscan artifacts and offered fascinating historical context, illustrating how the cellars played a critical role in the town's past.

Lunch at Podere II Casale:

After a morning of exploration, we enjoyed a leisurely lunch at Podere II Casale, a charming farmhouse offering incredible views of the Tuscan landscape. The meal was a celebration of local flavors:

  • Fresh cheeses and meats: A delightful platter of local cheeses, prosciutto and other cured meats arrived, showcasing the region's culinary diversity.
