Things to do in Milan
Duomo di Milano — This is Milan’s crown jewel! Towering over the Piazza del Duomo, this is a sight to behold. I highly recommend getting tour tickets that include roof access. It’s incredible to get up close to the intricate architecture that is usually only seen from so far below. There are also amazing views of the city.
Da Vinci’s ‘The Last Supper’ - The original ‘Last Supper’ is painted inside the Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie. Visits are organized so only small groups are allowed in at a time. It offers such an intimate experience with an incredible work of art! Advance tickets are required and can sell out weeks in advance, so be sure to buy ahead of time.
Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II — This isn’t your average upscale mall! In addition to high-end shopping, the neo-Renaissance architecture and soaring glass ceilings are stunning and make it a beautiful place to stroll through. If you’re feeling superstitious, legend has it that if you spin around three times on the bull in under the Octagon at the center, you’ll have good luck!
Navigli District — This is a charming little neighborhood in Milan, situated alongside two canals bordered by quirky, brightly colored buildings. There are lots of cool bars, art galleries and funky vintage shops. Navigli is the spot for nightlife and the best is place for an upscale aperitivo or an artisanal cocktail!
Places to eat & drink in Milan
The cuisine:
Italian food is very regional, so you’ll find the dishes vary across the country:
In Milan, risotto and polenta are local specialties, even more common than pasta. If you see a dish described as “alla Milanese,” you’ll know it’s traditional to the region.
You’ll find many restaurants located in the Galleria and around the Duomo, but I recommend getting a couple of blocks away from the historic center for a less touristy, more authentic experience!
Dishes to try:
Risotto alla Milanese — You can’t leave Milan without trying this signature saffron-infused risotto! You’ll recognize it by its bright yellow color.
Ossobuco - This is a braised veal shank complete with bone and marrow and is often served with risotto alla Milanese. A wonderful combo!
Cotoletta alla Milanese — On the bone and cooked in butter, this breaded veal cutlet is a mainstay on Milan’s menus!
Where to eat:
Rossini - I love the atmosphere in this restaurant! You’ll feel like you’re dining in an Italian wine cellar. The carbonara here is excellent, as is the lamb. I would definitely make a reservation ahead of time, as this is a very popular spot!
Luna Rosa — This is a casual, cozy little spot not far from the Duomo. Look around and you’ll see nearly every table feasting on risotto alla Milanese. It’s fabulous, here!
Pasto - Laboratorio — This is a small, modern restaurant in the historical center of Milan. They make their fresh pasta right there on the spot and offer four options daily. The menu changes seasonally, but if they have the cacio e pepe, I wouldn’t pass it up!
