Things to do in Boston

  • Watch the St. Patrick's Day Parade: Go to Boston's southside to watch one of the largest and oldest parades in the country. The parade features over 100 marching bands, floats and Irish dancers, all making their way down Boylston Street.

  • Take a tour of the Freedom Trail: A 2.5 mile walking trail that takes you to historic sites like Faneuil Hall, Old State House and the Boston Massacre site. It's a great way to learn all about Boston's history.

  • Visit the Irish Heritage Trail: This is a self-guided walking tour that takes you to some of Boston's most significant Irish landmarks. Along the way, you will learn about the history of Irish immigration to Boston and how the people have shaped the city's development.

  • Visit Fenway Park: One of the oldest baseball stadiums in the U.S., home to the Boston Red Sox. Even if you're not a baseball fan, it’s a fun place to visit. You can also take a tour of the stadium.

  • Walk around the North End: Boston’s Italian neighborhood, known for its delicious food. Grab a cannoli at Mike's Pastry or head to one of the many excellent restaurants here for authentic Italian meals.

  • Explore the Seaport District: This area is full of modern art galleries, waterfront restaurants and cool shops. It’s a great place to spend an afternoon.

  • Take a Harbor Cruise: Explore Boston from the water with a boat tour. You can take a historical tour, or if you're feeling adventurous, opt for a whale-watching cruise.

  • Stroll through Boston Common and Public Garden: The Boston Common is the oldest public park in the U.S., and next to it is the Public Garden, famous for its Swan Boats and beautiful landscaping.

  • Check out the New England Aquarium: If you like marine life, this place has it all. From sea turtles to penguins to an impressive IMAX theater, there’s plenty to see and do.

  • Tour the USS Constitution: You can visit the oldest commissioned warship afloat in the world. The ship is docked in Charlestown, and you can take a free tour.

  • Visit the Boston Tea Party Ships & Museum: A fun and interactive museum that takes you through the famous Boston Tea Party event with live reenactments, multimedia exhibits and a chance to toss tea into the harbor!

Day trips

  • Salem, MA (about 30 minutes from Boston)

  • Famous for its history, particularly the Salem Witch Trials of 1692. You can visit the Salem Witch Museum, the House of the Seven Gables and the Peabody Essex Museum. The town also has lovely streets for walking, cute shops and great restaurants. It’s especially popular in the fall during Halloween season.

  • Martha's Vineyard, MA (about 1.5 hours by ferry)

  • Just off the coast of Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard is known for its beautiful beaches, charming small towns and scenic views. You can take a ferry from Woods Hole, MA, to the island, and spend your day exploring the towns of Oak Bluffs and Edgartown, or relaxing on the beach.

  • Gloucester, MA (about 45 minutes from Boston)

  • A scenic coastal town known for its fishing history and beautiful views. You can visit the Fishermen’s Memorial, take a whale watching tour or walk around the harbor area. Good for a more relaxed day by the water, with some great seafood spots.

Breakfast:

  • Tatte Bakery & Cafe:
    Known for its delicious pastries, sandwiches and coffee, Tatte is a favorite for breakfast and brunch. The menu includes everything from shakshuka to fresh pastries and avocado toast. Multiple locations in the city.

  • Beacon Hill Bistro:
    A great spot if you want a more refined breakfast or brunch experience. They have a variety of options, from classic eggs to inventive dishes, all in a charming atmosphere.

  • The Local Kitchen & Bar:
    A great spot for a more laid-back brunch, offering things like cinnamon rolls, eggs and pancakes. The portions are generous, and the vibe is casual. Located in the Fenway area.

Lunch:

  • Union Oyster House:
    One of Boston’s oldest restaurants, it offers a classic New England seafood experience. Whether you’re in the mood for clam chowder, lobster or fish and chips, it’s a great place to try some local favorites.

  • Sweet Cheeks Q:
    For some of the best BBQ in Boston, Sweet Cheeks in Fenway is the place to go. They have great smoked meats, delicious sides like mac and cheese and tasty cornbread. Perfect for a filling and flavorful lunch.

  • Sam LaGrassa's:
    Known for its sandwiches, especially the pastrami and corned beef, Sam LaGrassa's is a great spot if you're craving a hearty lunch. Located in the Financial District, it’s been a local favorite for years.

Dinner:

  • Mamma Maria's:
    Cuisine: Italian
    Location: North End
    If you're craving classic Italian, Mamma Maria in the North End is the place to go. Known for its homemade pasta and traditional Italian dishes, it’s a must-visit spot for Italian food lovers. The cozy vibe and delicious meals make it perfect for a night out.

  • The Bristol:
    Cuisine: American/Contemporary
    Location: Back Bay
    Located inside the Four Seasons Hotel, The Bristol is a high-end American restaurant that offers a great selection of fresh, seasonal dishes with a focus on quality ingredients. It's perfect for a sophisticated dinner.

  • Toro:
    Cuisine: Spanish, Tapas
    Location: South End
    Toro is a trendy spot that serves up creative Spanish tapas and cocktails in a cool, bustling atmosphere. The dishes are perfect for sharing, and their charcuterie boards, grilled meats and seafood are standout options.

  • No 9 Park:
    Cuisine: French, Italian-inspired
    Location: Beacon Hill
    Located in a charming corner of Beacon Hill, No. 9 Park serves French and Italian-inspired cuisine in a cozy, romantic atmosphere. Their duck confit and French onion soup are favorites. Perfect for an intimate dinner.
