Curator’s statement

The Banff area was high on my bucket list for many years before finally getting to go, and it lived up to every expectation. The bright blue water is unlike anything you have ever seen, and the entire area is so beautiful that we could barely drive for 20 minutes before having to stop to take more photos. Yes, even the ROADS are that beautiful!

Things to do in the Banff area

A road going towards snow covered mountains.
  • Moraine Lake
You have probably seen Moraine Lake on a screensaver somewhere. It is known for its crazy turquoise water and the fact that it sits right under the Valley of the Ten Peaks, making it the perfect backdrop for photos. You can take in the views from the shoreline or hike around the area to get a view of the lake from above.

  • Peyto Lake
Peyto Lake is famous for its shape, appearing like a wolf. It is also one of the brightest turquoise lakes in the area, so it's a no-brainer to stop here and take in the views. You can take a quick hike up to the viewpoint in order to see it, and it is the perfect stop if you are driving along the famous Icefields Parkway.

  • Lake Louise
I am sure you have heard of Lake Louise, but no matter how many times you have seen photos if it, it will still strike you with awe the first time you see it in person. With its vastness and clear, bright blue water, it is truly one of the most beautiful places on earth! In the summer, you can rent kayaks or canoes to take a ride out, and in the winter it is amazing for ice skating.

  • Yoho National Park - Natural Bridge and Emerald Lake
Check out the Natural Bridge in Yoho National Park for more of nature's absolute wonders in this area. It is located right on the side of Emerald Bridge Road, so it's great to combine these two stops together. The Kicking Horse River flows right under the bridge, and it's a great photo spot. Emerald Lake is a great place to take kayaks, canoes or paddleboards out, and there is also a restaurant at Emerald Lake Lodge. Keep your eyes peeled for wildlife here — you may be able to see bald eagles!

  • Herbert Lake
Herbert Lake is usually not mentioned in many Banff roundups, but it was one of my favorite views of the entire trip. I didn't plan to go here, but when I was driving north on the Icefields Parkway to get to Jasper, we passed right by Herbert Lake and were greeted by the most amazing reflection I have ever seen. If you are up early and there is little to no wind, head to Herbert Lake to see this spectacle for yourself.

  • Johnston Canyon
Johnston Canyon is a great and relatively easy hike to take in the area, but I recommend getting up early to start it as it does get super crowded (like most places in the area!). There are beautiful falls along the trail, but the highlight is the "hidden cave" that you can go off the trail to find if you follow the trail towards the Upper Falls. About seven minutes into that walk, you will see trails of footprints and openings in the trees to your right. Follow those and you will finally get to the cave with the photogenic rock as seen in the photo.

  • Maligne Lake
Maligne Lake is a bit north of Banff National Park in Jasper National Park, but the drive between the two is spectacular and worth it! Here, you can take a boat cruise in the summer to Spirit Island to see fantastic views from the water. I highly recommend!

  • Athabasca Falls
Athabasca Falls is another amazing landmark in Jasper National Park. The falls can be enjoyed from several different viewpoints and there are many places to walk around and take it all in. They are considered the most powerful waterfalls in the Canadian Rockies.

  • Maligne Canyon
Maligne Canyon is another must-see when in Jasper National Park. The canyon looks completely otherworldly, and is magical no matter what time of year you are visiting! There are scenic bridges, ancient fossils and lots of waterfalls.
