Curator’s statement
The western Algarve is a stunning mix of rugged coastlines, quaint towns, emerald seas and desert landscapes, making this a truly unique beach getaway. While many of us have been to beaches around the world, the Algarve vistas, caves, arches and cliff formations jetting out from the Atlantic are truly one-of-a-kind and truly stunning. In addition to the Algarve’s beauty, it’s ideal for relaxation, surfing, kayaking, boating and beach hikes. It’s a fun, easy and truly outstanding year-round getaway with your college-age study abroad kid!

Things to do in Algarve

Beach Time: The Algarve is full of awe-inspiring walks and hikes along cliff backed beaches. Let’s start with the most stunning — the absolutely gorgeous vista of Ponta di Piedade!! Visiting this area is a favorite memory for my college-age son and I, both of us mesmerized by the vast nature of the views. We recommend taking the steep stairs to the water’s edge or you can visit by boat to experience the grottos up close.
Boat or kayak to Benagil Cave, reachable only by guide via water. Formed by nature’s erosion, this cave has two entrances, a skylight and a small beach inside. It's truly a one-of-a-kind cave experience. Pro-tip, work with a kayak / boat guide for entry and enjoy a cave swim!
Visit Praia da Marinha, a stunner! The second-prettiest beach in the Algarve. Bring your towel, a beachy read, an umbrella and your college ‘kid’ to relax in the sun.
Run, play beach volleyball or taste salty seafood treats along the boardwalk of Portimao. It’s a big beach with soft and luxurious sand to dip your toes in. Tip: Enjoy a cold Sagres beer at a boardwalk cafe and local, grilled sardines.
Witness white storks and their large nests on lightposts, signs and chimneys along the drive from Lagos to Portimao.
Stay in and explore Carvoeira, the quaintest of resort towns in this region. It features traditional shops, architecture and colorful houses.
Visit Praia do Paraiso (at low tide), ideally positioned for wind protection and privacy — not to mention beauty!
For the more active and adventurous, hike the 7 Hanging Valleys Trail, a moderately challenging hike with stunning vistas and views of the gorgeous Algarve coast.
Splash into the fun and colorful pool at the W Algarve, with music, poolside cafe and bar.
Places to eat & drink in Algarve

Dinner at the W Algarve Hotel: Delicious Piri-Piri Chicken followed by Port wine from the Douro Valley.
Restaurant Praia da Praia de Sao Rafael: A small local fresh fish beach shack where you select your fresh fish (displayed on ice). This restaurant is known for it’s modest style, to bring out the true fish flavor. Fish grilled and served next to gorgeous beach-side views.
The One, an elevated menu with tastings including vegetarian, Portuguese traditional dishes as well as rack of lamb and steak.
Need to know
I recommend renting a car while exploring the many beaches and towns along the Western coast of the Algarve — it's easy!
