Curator’s statement

If you’re a traveling cat-lover (like me), Istanbul must be on your bucket list. Istanbul is a vibrant city where East meets West, renowned for its rich history, magnificent architecture and lively streets. But there's something else that makes this city unique: it's cats! From ancient palaces to modern cafés, cats are everywhere in Istanbul, and the city has earned its reputation as the "world capital of cats."

Istanbul’s special relationship with cats began in the Byzantine and Ottoman eras when they were prized for their ability to control the rodent population in a city surrounded by water, where ships and food stores were vulnerable to pests. Over time, these working cats became cherished members of the community.

What makes Istanbul’s cats so unique is their semi-wild status. They’re not feral, nor are they fully domesticated. They roam freely, but are lovingly cared for by residents, who often leave food and water out for them. Cats in Istanbul are considered part of the urban fabric, and the local community and government both take collective responsibility for their welfare.

Best places to meet Istanbul's cats

  • Hagia Sophia: The iconic Hagia Sophia, with its stunning Byzantine architecture, is home to several well-known cats. One of the most famous was Gli, a cross-eyed cat who lived in Hagia Sophia for years, even posing for photos with world leaders. While Gli passed away in 2020, her legacy lives on, and many other cats now call this historical site their home. You’ll find cats lounging in the garden or near the entrance, often basking in the sun.

  • Topkapi Palace: Once the residence of Ottoman sultans, Topkapi Palace is another cat haven. The expansive grounds and courtyards are perfect for exploring while keeping an eye out for feline residents. These cats are known to hang out near the palace’s cafés and quiet corners, adding to the tranquil ambiance of this historical landmark.

  • Cihangir District: Cihangir, one of Istanbul's trendiest neighborhoods, is renowned for its Bohemian atmosphere — and its cats. The area is home to numerous cafés and boutiques, many of which have their own resident cats. Stroll through the streets of Cihangir, and you'll see cats lounging on café chairs, peeking out from behind flowerpots or napping on windowsills. The laid-back vibe makes it the perfect neighborhood to grab a coffee and watch the local cats in action.

  • Balat: The colorful and historic neighborhood of Balat, with its narrow streets and vibrant homes, is a hidden gem for cat lovers. Many street cats can be found here, enjoying the attention from friendly locals and tourists alike. As you explore Balat’s historic architecture and artisan shops, you’ll likely encounter a cat or two perched on a doorstep or curled up in a sunlit alley.
