Curator’s statement

Edinburgh is a magical, fairytale city with castles, cobblestone streets, underground alleyways, extensive graveyards, and much more. I would say that THE BEST time to visit Edinburgh (and Scotland in general) is in August. Here’s why: The Tattoo, The Fringe, and the weather.

Things to do in Edinburgh

The Edinburgh Festival Fringe is the world's largest performance arts festival.

The Best Weather

July and August have the best weather out of the year, with the average high being 65° and the low being 51°. The other benefits of going to August are the green highlands and the long days of summer sunlight.

The Edinburgh Military Tattoo

With Edinburgh Castle as the backdrop, the world-renowned Edinburgh Military Tattoo showcases military bands, dancers, and performers from around the world. Since starting in 1950, the Tattoo is now one of the most iconic events on Edinburgh's calendar. In my opinion, this show should be on everyone’s bucket list.

What to Expect:

- Bagpipes, dancers, the precision of military drills, and the dazzling lights and fireworks create a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

- In 2022, we saw the US Marines Band, the Swiss precision drumming, Mexico’s traditional dancers and warriors, and so much more.

- The show ends with a lone bagpiper standing on top of the castle while fireworks start. It is honestly one of the coolest performances I have ever seen.

The Edinburgh Festival Fringe

The second amazing event that happens in August is the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, the world's largest performing arts festival. The city's streets, theaters, and public spaces transform into stages for thousands of artists, from comedians and actors to musicians and visual artists. In 2019, the Festival spanned 25 days and featured more than 59,600 performances of 3,841 different shows in 322 venues.

What to Expect:

- Unpredictable and quirky performances in traditional theaters and pop-up venues such as backyards, storage containers, or even busses.

- A vibrant street scene filled with buskers, art installations, and pop-up food stalls. There will be something for everyone.

- A wildly diverse program featuring everything from Shakespearean classics to avant-garde performances.

What Else Does Edinburgh Have to Offer

Here are a few more sites and experiences Edinburgh has to offer:

- Royal Mile + Edinburgh Castle: Take a walk on the Royal Mile that leads straight to Edinburgh Castle. Make sure you walk Victoria Street to or from the castle as well.

- Scott Monument: This is a beautiful piece of Gothic architecture that you can climb to the top if you are interested.

- The Real Mary King’s Close: See what a 17th-century street was like in Edinburgh with a preserved underground Close.

- Greyfriars Kirkyard: Stop by to see where Harry Potter characters' names came from and see the monument to a Skye Terrier named Bobby.

- Arthur’s Seat: Take this hike to see a great view and have a picnic.

- Golf at St. Andrews: If you are a golfer, this should definitely be on your itinerary.

Edinburgh in August is a delightful mix of culture, entertainment, and perfect weather. The Edinburgh Military Tattoo and the Edinburgh Festival Fringe offer world-class experiences and the comfortable weather will let you make the most of your visit, exploring the city's rich history, stunning landscapes, and vibrant street scenes.
