Curator’s statement

Since moving to San Francisco, we’ve made many trips to Kauai. Compared to the other islands, Kauai is by far my favorite thanks to the incredible beaches, lush greenery, access to amazing hiking and snorkeling and laidback vibe.

Things to do in Kaua'i

A lush green garden during daytime with a rock wall and a path leading to water.
  • Head north and hike the Nā Pali Coast. While the more adventurous hikers will stay overnight, we prefer doing half day trips on the Kalalau Trail to Hanakāpī‘ai Beach. On the way home, make sure to check out Hanalei and treat yourself to Wishing Well Shave Ice.

  • Hike Waimea Canyon. We especially love Canyon Trail to Waipo’o Falls for the views, moderate terrain and opportunities to cool off in and near the waterfalls. Stop in Hanapepe after your hike to check out the Hanapepe Swinging Bridge and shops, and grab a delicious lunch at Japanese Grandma’s Café.

  • Check out the Nā Pali Coast by boat. Just make sure not to eat a huge meal beforehand! The swells can get pretty large, especially in the late morning and afternoon.

  • Spend plenty of time in the water — either snorkeling or taking surf lessons. If you’re lucky, you’ll spot sea turtles!

  • Visit the Allerton Garden for a guided tour of tropical flora, “outdoor rooms” and architecture. Well worth spending an afternoon – just make sure to bring bug spray!

  • Visit Kauai Coffee Plantation to see how coffee is grown and manufactured at the largest coffee farm in the US.

Lunch recommendations

  • Duke’s Kauai: The perfect spot for a beachfront lunch (and your first mai tai) in Lihue to kick off your vacation from the airport.

  • Koloa Fish Market: Must-visit for poke bowls, salads and fresh fish if you are planning to cook at home.

  • Japanese Grandma’s Cafe: Stop here for lunch on your way back from visiting Waimea Canyon.
