Curator’s statement

Having called Munich home for the past five years, I thought it was about time I share a little bit about the unique charm and vibrancy of this Bavarian gem. If you find yourself with just 24 hours in this beautiful city, here's a mini guide to ensure you experience the best it has to offer. Munich effortlessly blends the allure of a small town with the sophistication of a major city. While two days would be ideal to fully immerse yourself in its wonders, this guide will help you make the most of even a brief visit.

Things to do in Munich

Lush greenery and a serene river beside a yellow building at The English Garden.

Munich offers a wide range of museums. Here are a few options for you to choose from, depending on your interests. Keep in mind to just pick one if you are visiting only for one day.

  • NS-Dokumentationszentrum (Documentation Center for the History of National Socialism): Dive deep into the harrowing history of World War II and the Holocaust with powerful exhibits and educational resources.

  • Residenz: Explore the opulent former palace of Bavarian monarchs, filled with lavish rooms, stunning artwork and historical artifacts.

  • Deutsches Museum: Enjoy a comprehensive and engaging exploration of the history and development of science and technology, making it a must-visit attraction for anyone interested in these fields.

  • BMW Welt & Museum: Perfect for car enthusiasts, this museum showcases the history, innovation and future of the iconic automobile brand.

  • Lenbachhaus: Home to an impressive collection of 19th- and early-20th-century art, this museum is ideal for art lovers, though you might consider skipping it if you're heading to art-rich cities like Paris or Florence.

For sightseeing, don’t miss:

  • Marienplatz: The heart of Munich, this lively square is home to the iconic New Town Hall and its captivating Glockenspiel (clock) show. For the soccer fans, this is also where FC Bayern goes to celebrate.

  • Frauenkirche: An iconic symbol of Munich, this Gothic cathedral is renowned for its twin towers and stunning interior.

  • Odeonsplatz: A grand square surrounded by impressive architecture, including the Feldherrnhalle and the Theatine Church.

  • Viktualienmarkt: A bustling outdoor market where you can sample fresh local produce, gourmet foods and traditional Bavarian specialties.

  • English Garden: One of the largest urban parks in the world, featuring the famous Eisbach Wave (seriously need to see) for surfing. Local tip: If you are stopping by during summer, you can jump in the water, but only if you are a pro swimmer!

  • Hofbräuhaus: A world-famous brewery known for its lively atmosphere and traditional Bavarian beer hall experience. For a more local feel, consider Seehaus im Englischen Garten.

Breakfast

  • Café Reitschule: Enjoy a delightful breakfast in a unique setting overlooking the historic riding school, with a chill ambiance and delicious offerings.

  • Lyfe: A modern café with a focus on healthy, organic options, perfect for starting your day with a nutritious and tasty meal.

  • Café Conte: Experience a blend of classic and contemporary at this chic café, offering a delightful breakfast menu with freshly baked goods, artisanal coffee and a stylish ambiance perfect for a relaxed morning start.

Lunch or dinner

  • Spatenhaus an der Oper: Located near the opera house, this restaurant serves traditional German cuisine in an elegant setting, perfect for a taste of Bavarian classics.

  • Der Pschorr: Situated in the heart of the city, this venue offers hearty German dishes and a lively atmosphere, making it a great spot to experience local flavors.

  • Bamberger Haus: Located in a more residential area, this restaurant provides a cozy, rustic setting for enjoying traditional Bavarian meals.

Munich also offers great Italian cuisine. One standout for me is:

  • Seerose: Nestled next to the English Garden, this Italian restaurant boasts delicious dishes and a beautiful location.

Drinks

  • Chinese Tower (Chinesischer Turm) in the English Garden: Enjoy a German beer at this iconic beer garden within the lush park setting. If you are visiting in winter, then enjoy mulled wine at the Christmas market (one of my favorites in the city).

  • Bar Montez: Indulge in fancy cocktails and soak in the elegant jazz bar vibes at this sophisticated venue.

  • Bar Centrale: Experience Italian bar culture with stylish drinks and a lively atmosphere in the heart of Munich.
