A breathtaking sunset over a verdant tea plantation, with the sun casting a warm glow over the undulating hills and power lines stretching across the sky.

Things to do in Sonoma, CA

A celebratory moment with hands holding glasses of red wine, clinking in a toast, set against a backdrop of natural light.

Sonoma Valley is a picturesque destination in California's wine country, offering a delightful array of activities and experiences for visitors to enjoy. Whether you're a wine enthusiast, a foodie or simply seeking natural beauty and relaxation.

Getting there

Getting to Sonoma, California, is relatively straightforward, as the region is conveniently located within a few hours' drive from major cities and airports in Northern California. My favorite airport nearby is Santa Rosa. It’s small and incredibly easy to navigate.

Inn at Sonoma, Four Sisters

Nestled in the heart of Sonoma Valley, surrounded by rolling vineyards and quaint town charm, the Inn at Sonoma offers a delightful retreat for travelers seeking relaxation and a taste of wine country luxury. It’s located just steps away from Sonoma Plaza, the Inn at Sonoma offers convenient access to a variety of attractions. Managed by the esteemed Four Sisters Inns, this boutique inn promises a unique blend of comfort, hospitality and local flair. Each room at the Inn at Sonoma is thoughtfully designed with comfort and relaxation in mind. During my stay, I had the pleasure of staying in a beautifully appointed guest room featuring plush bedding, elegant furnishings and modern amenities. The daily complimentary breakfast went way beyond your standard hotel fair, and they had a wine reception with charcuterie in the evenings. Such a lovely way to start and end your day!

Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa

The Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa is a luxurious resort nestled in the heart of Sonoma Valley, renowned for its natural hot springs, world-class spa and elegant accommodations. It’s easy to feel like a celebrity! With stunning guest rooms and suites, each featuring luxurious amenities and elegant decor inspired by California's wine country. Guests can choose from a variety of room types, including Fairmont rooms, suites and specialty rooms with private patios or fireplaces. Amazing perks such as upgrade on arrival (subject to availability), daily breakfast for up to two guests per bedroom, $100 USD equivalent resort or hotel credit utilized during stay, early check-in / late check-out (subject to availability) and complimentary Wi-Fi.

Tasting rooms & Vineyards

Sonoma is renowned for its world-class wineries and vineyards. One of my favorite ways to explore the region's diverse wine offerings by visiting tasting rooms along the Sonoma Valley Wine Trolley. I have done a day trip with the trolley two times and each time it was wonderful! A tip: the trolley is open-air and gets very windy. Take an extra layer to keep warm! Sonoma Plaza has many tasting rooms as well that you can walk to if you want to avoid needing a designated driver. Don’t miss Sigh, my favorite bubble bar featuring Rose and Sangria slushies!

Sonoma from the sky

Another way to experience Sonoma from a unique perspective by taking a hot air balloon ride over the valley with Sonoma Ballooning. Enjoy panoramic views of vineyards, rolling hills and the majestic countryside. It’s very peaceful! 10/10 recommend!

Places to eat & drink in Sonoma, CA

A delicious pizza with a golden crust and fresh basil, straight out of a flaming wood-fired oven.

Culinary delights

Sonoma County boasts a vibrant culinary scene. Treat yourself to farm-to-table dining at local restaurants, visit farmers' markets to sample fresh produce or take a cooking class to learn about the region's gastronomic treasures. My favorite breakfast spot is Sunflower Caffe, it’s delicious and located right in the plaza. Located in Sonoma Plaza, The Girl & The Fig is a beloved restaurant offering seasonal French-inspired cuisine with a California twist. Enjoy dishes like duck confit, cheese boards and their famous fig and arugula salad. The outdoor patio is perfect for alfresco dining. My favorite restaurant is really a special place! You must try Cafe La Haye! It’s nothing short of delightful. The combination of flavorful dishes, attentive service and inviting ambiance makes for a memorable dining experience. A casual yet inviting restaurant in Sonoma Plaza, The Red Grape serves delicious wood-fired pizzas, hearty pastas and fresh salads. It's a great spot for families too!

No matter what activities you choose, Sonoma promises a memorable and enriching experience. Whether you're seeking relaxation, adventure or cultural immersion, this vibrant destination has something to offer every traveler!
