Curator’s statement
It’s no secret that Portugal is an incredible place to visit any time of year, however should you visit in the winter? The answer is a resounding “yes.” While the winter months can be a bit rainy, the weather during our most recent trip to Lisbon and the Algarve in mid-December could not have been more perfect. We would do it again in a heartbeat. We had nothing but sunny skies and temps in the high 50's during the day and 40 degrees at night. Think cozy layers and Christmas markets. If this sounds amazing to you, then read on for things to do and places to see during a December visit to Portugal.

Things to do in Portugal
Lisbon
Holiday Walking Tour: Hit the ground running (or walking!) with a tour to get your bearings and to see all the fabulous Christmas decor and markets. Don't miss the musical tree in the famous Chiado neighborhood.
Grab a taxi or Uber down to the riverfront to see these two monuments and the monastery:
Castelo de São Jorge: Make your way uphill to this 2nd-century fortress for a little history and incredible views of the city and the Tagus River.
Algarve
Seven Hanging Valleys Hike: An absolutely stunning hike along the coast. Start at Praia da Marinha Beach and walk for 3.7 miles. Note: the restaurant at the end of the trail is closed in the off-season, so bring plenty of water and snacks!
Day Trips
Private Sintra Day Tour: This tour includes everything! Old town Sintra, a drive past Pena Palace. A tour of Quinta da Regaleira, Cabo da Roca. A wine tasting and ice cream in Caiscais.
Wine Tour Algarve: While the Algarve isn't exactly known for its wine, this is a thoroughly enjoyable tour that includes two wineries (with delicious wine!) and lunch in the medieval town of Silves.
Places to eat & drink in Portugal
Lisbon
Maria Catita: Try the Bacalhau à Brás, a traditional cod dish.
Antigua Wine Bar: Small wine bar just off the beaten path.
Time Out Market: A sprawling food hall that offers a little taste of everything.
Pastéis de Belém: The original home of Portugal's famous cream pastries.
Tapisco: Delicious Spanish tapas at the top of the Bairro Alto district.
The Algarve (Albufeira)
Paper Moon: Located in the W Algarve Hotel. Spectacular food, service and views.
A Ruína: Fresh seafood restaurant atop a tower wall, overlooking the sea in Albufeira.
Need to know
The rumors about the steep streets in Lisbon are absolutely true. Bring comfortable walking shoes and be prepared to walk up narrow inclines. If that sounds unappealing, don't worry! Uber in Portugal is incredibly inexpensive and efficient. There are also lots of fun Tuk-Tuks in the city, ready and available to take you to your desired destination.
