Things to do in Galapagos

The Galapagos consists of 21 islands, each with its own distinct characteristics and attractions.

Santa Cruz Island The central hub of the Galapagos, Santa Cruz Island is where most tours and accommodations are based. It is also home to the famous Charles Darwin Research Station, where you can learn about the island's conservation efforts and see giant tortoises. Other must-do activities on Santa Cruz include snorkeling at Tortuga Bay, hiking to the summit of Cerro Mesa, and visiting the lava tunnels.

Isabela Island As the largest island in the Galapagos, Isabela is a must-visit for its incredible views and diverse wildlife. The most famous attraction here is the Sierra Negra Volcano, which boasts the second-largest crater in the world. You can also hike to the top of Volcán Chico for a panoramic view of the island. Isabela is also known for its marine life, making it a perfect spot for snorkeling and diving.

San Cristobal Island
San Cristobal Island is where Charles Darwin first stepped foot on the Galapagos, making it a significant location for those interested in the island's history. The island is home to the Galapagos National Park Interpretation Center, which offers an in-depth understanding of the islands' formation, flora and fauna, and conservation efforts. Other activities on the island include kayaking, diving, and visiting the famous Kicker Rock.

Floreana Island
Floreana Island offers a more laid-back and secluded experience. It is home to the iconic Post Office Bay, where sailors used to leave their letters for others to pick up and deliver. You can also visit the Devil's Crown, a popular snorkeling spot, and see a variety of marine life, including sea lions, rays, and colorful fish. For a unique experience, spend a night at one of the island's eco-lodges and observe the giant tortoises in their natural habitat.

Fernandina Island
This is the youngest and most pristine island in the Galapagos. It is home to a large colony of marine iguanas, the only ocean-going lizards in the world. Here you can also spot penguins, flightless cormorants, and Galapagos sea lions. A highlight of this island is the hike up the La Cumbre Volcano, which offers stunning views of the island and its neighboring islands.

There are several ways to island hop in the Galapagos. You can travel by a small-seater plane, ferry, or speedboat. Your choice will depend on time constraints, as well as budget and personal preferences.

The best time to go for an island hopping trip to the Galapagos is between December and May. This is the warm and wet season when you can witness the mating rituals of the wildlife and see sea turtles nesting. From June to November, it is the cool and dry season, perfect for snorkeling and diving, as well as spotting humpback whales and sea lions.

The Galapagos Islands offer an unparalleled experience for those seeking an adventurous vacation. From hiking volcanoes to swimming with sea lions, each island has something special to offer. So embark on an island hopping trip and discover the wonders of the Galapagos for yourself.
