Curator’s statement
Key West is the southernmost part of the United States, marked by a buoy that makes a great photo op. If you haven’t been or are looking to book a vacation to this beautiful island, then hopefully my guide will help you decide that it is time for you to book. I have visited Key West multiple times over the years and each time it never disappoints me. I do recommend at least four days on the island to have time to see things and get the island vibe. I would go more often if there were more direct flights from Houston, but I tend to find myself in Fort Lauderdale because of the ease of getting there and to the beach within hours of leaving my home.

Things to do in Key West
Now, when I travel, I am not one who will not pack my schedule with a bunch of tourist activities. I am more of a go-with-the-flow type of traveler. I will pick a few things each time and set out to explore, but most of my time is spent at the pool or in a nice restaurant bar. Nonetheless, here are some of my recommendations when visiting Key West.
First, note that Duval Street is the main street for a lot of entertainment and restaurants. I have done these things but not all in one visit, so I hope you love my recommendations and let me know what you think for yourself:
This is not for the faint of heart, but the first place I ever was brave enough to rent a moped was in Key West. It was a lot of fun and really allowed us to get out and explore Key West. However, you need to take your time and be safe. The experience was a lot of fun but don’t do it on the day you want to bar hop!
Hemingway tour: You can’t go to Key West without visiting the home of Ernest Hemingway, one of the most well-known American writers of the 20th century.
Southernmost point of the continental USA for a great photo op
BluQ Catamaran Tour: This all-male catamaran tour gives you a day on the water to snorkel and relax in the sun!
Places to eat & drink in Key West
Blue Heaven: Serves breakfast, lunch and dinner with a great Sunday breakfast that is always a favorite and a wait to be seated generally because of the popularity. Don’t be surprised if a chicken is lurking around your table while you eat. They are harmless and just looking for chicken scratch! Everything looks good on the menu, but I will let you be the one to choose your favorite — however, I don’t leave without getting a piece of key lime pie here!
Two Friends Patio Restaurant: Something about this place draws me here each time. It’s a friendly patio bar that has great-tasting food and a fun atmosphere!
Conch Republic Seafood Company: I loved the laidback atmosphere of this restaurant that overlooked the marina and port. The food was fresh and a great place to sit on the water and feel the sea breeze come in while you enjoy a tasty meal.
Mangoes Restaurant: What a cute little place on Duval Street to watch the action and eat a great seafood meal.
Sloppy Joe’s Bar: You can’t go to Key West without heading over to Sloppy Joe’s Bar to listen to live music and great drinks.
New Orleans House: This is a hotel with a pool bar that you can’t be shy about because you are about to awaken to a fun environment. It is clothing-optional so I don’t recommend you take mama with you on this adventure! Now don’t be shy — it’s optional, but I can assure you that you will have fun because, well, the people are fun, of course!
