Embark on a mesmerizing journey through the hidden wonders of Tasmania, affectionately known as "Tassie" by Australians. Our seven-day road trip along the East Coast of Tasmania was a captivating exploration of this secluded island paradise, steeped in history and brimming with natural beauty. With its untouched beauty and welcoming atmosphere, Tassie has captured a piece of our hearts and we were already dreaming of our return to this hidden gem in the southern sea.

Day 1: Hobart to Coles Bay

Morning: Arriving at Hobart airport, Tasmania's vibrant capital city, we eagerly collected our rental car, ready to start our adventure. As we drove along the picturesque East Coast towards Freycinet National Park, the rugged cliffs and pristine beaches mesmerized us.

Mid-morning: Our first stop was Bark Mill Tavern & Bakery in Swansea, where we couldn't resist trying Tasmania's famous Scallop Pies. These savory delights are a local favorite and the perfect snack for your road trip. We took them to Jubilee Beach for lunch, where we enjoyed a picnic with stunning views over Coles Bay.

Afternoon: Tasmania's flourishing wine scene beckoned us, leading the popular Devils Corner Winery for stunning views and Freycinet Winery, a small-batch vineyard that made our favorite vino discovery of the trip- the Wine Glass Bay Sauvignon Blanc. We felt truly immersed in the flavors of the region.

Evening: As the day winds down, we made our way to Friendly Beaches to witness the sunset paint vivid hues over the serene coastline—a magical end to our first day.

Accommodation Options: Stay at a local vacation rental for cozy simplicity or enjoy an immersive luxury retreat amid nature's splendor at Freycinet Lodge. The only resort located inside of the national park.

Day 2: Explore Freycinet National Park

Morning: Waking up to the stunning beaches of Coles Bay, we grabbed a delicious breakfast at Geographe Restaurant and Espresso Bar, fueling up for a day of exploration.

Mid-morning to afternoon: Embarking on a scenic hike through Freycinet National Park, we were awestruck by the lush forests and turquoise waters. The 10-mile round-trip track led us to Wineglass Bay lookout, offering panoramic vistas of the pristine bay, before leading to the idyllic Honeymoon Bay.

Late Afternoon: After a day of exploration, we showered up and took a leisurely stroll from our Airbnb to The Bay Restaurant at Freycinet Lodge, where we indulged in a sunset dinner of fresh local oysters and seafood, overlooking the tranquil waters.

Evening: As darkness fell, we took a leisurely stroll back along Richardson Beach, the soft glow of twilight enveloping us in serenity—a perfect end to another day of exploration.

Day 3: Coles Bay to Scamander

Morning: Bid farewell to Coles Bay and set off on our journey northwards. Our next stop was Bicheno, a charming seaside town known for its abundant wildlife, with a stop at the mesmerizing Bicheno Blow Hole along the way.

Late Morning: Immerse yourself in the wonders of East Coast Natureworld animal sanctuary, where you can interact with native wildlife and learn about Tasmania's unique ecosystem. It was a truly enchanting experience, observing these adorable creatures in their natural habitat. An absolute must-do and highlight of our trip!

Lunch: Our taste buds were treated to a mouthwatering lobster roll and crisp glass of rose at Lobster Shack in Bicheno—a culinary delight that fueled us for the road ahead.

Afternoon: Continuing our coastal drive towards Scamander, we marveled at the pristine beaches and picturesque landscapes, each stop revealing a new facet of Tasmania's beauty.

Evening: We Arrived at the FlopHouse in Scamander a charming Airbnb, where the gracious hosts Rod and Fiona treated us to a board of local cheese, more wine and a tour of their organic garden. A welcomed and relaxing end to our day of exploration.

Day 4: Binalong Bay and Bay of Fires

Morning: We kick-started our day with a visit to St. Helen’s Farmers Market, a bustling hub of local produce and delicious treats. Here, we savored freshly brewed lattes and indulged in a mouthwatering crepe breakfast, setting the tone for a day filled with culinary delights and breathtaking landscapes.

Mid-morning: With spirits high and energy levels soaring, we set off for Binalong Bay, ready to embark on a scenic six-mile round-trip coastal hike. The trail led us from the bay to Skeleton Point, offering our first views of the Bay of Fires.

Lunch: After working up an appetite on our hike, we refueled at Meresta Eatery, where we treated ourselves to pizzas and chilled vino. Sitting overlooking the pristine white sands and turquoise waters of Binalong Bay, we couldn't help but feel grateful for the natural beauty surrounding us.

Afternoon: We made our way to "The Gardens" in the Bay of Fires, renowned for its powder-white sands and crystal-clear waters. We spent the day basking in the sun, bouldering over the vibrant orange lichen-covered rocks along the coastline, discovering mermaid ponds and swimming in the brisk glacial ocean of hidden beaches- relishing in the unspoiled beauty of the area.

Evening: As the sun began to dip below the horizon, we made our way to The Social in St. Helen’s—a laid-back eatery known for its hip vibe, mouthwatering tacos and locally brewed beer. We soaked in the relaxed atmosphere of this coastal town, savoring every moment of our East Coast Tasmania experience.

Day 5: Maria Island Excursion and Hobart

Morning: With the promise of another unforgettable day ahead, we rose early for a scenic sunrise drive from Scamander to Triabunna. The tranquil roads offered a peaceful start to our day, with abundant wildlife emerging with dawn, adding to the magic of the journey.

Late Morning to Afternoon: Boarding a boat excursion to Maria Island, a UNESCO World Heritage site, we found ourselves immersed in history and natural beauty. Exploring the island's rugged coastline, convict ruins, and famous painted cliffs, we encountered native wildlife, including kangaroos and wombats—each sighting adding to the wonder of the experience.

Evening: Arriving back in Hobart, we checked into the Crowne Plaza Hotel. Despite being a fine accommodation choice, if you desire a longer stay, consider one of the waterfront hotels for a more luxurious experience.

Night: We took a leisurely nighttime walk along the Battery Point waterfront, exploring the eateries and soaking in the historic charm of this picturesque area.

Day 6: MONA Museum and Wine Tasting

Morning: We embarked on a unique journey by camo-painted ferry to the Museum of Old and New Art (MONA). Splurging for the “posh pit” VIP section, where guests indulge in complimentary drinks and appetizers as we cruise along the river.

Mid-day: We spent the day at MONA, an immersive blend of art, culture, food and provocative installations. Taking a break from the many attractions, we enjoyed a leisurely lunch at Moorilla Wine Bar, nestled next to MONA's outdoor grassy field.

Afternoon: It was time for a proper wine tasting at MONA’s Cellar Door, sampling their signature Moorilla wines adorned with cheeky labels. We took the last ferry of the day back to Hobart, savoring the posh pit cocktails and scenic views along the way.

Evening: Return to Battery Point and unwind in the comfort of your hotel, pleasantly buzzed and exhausted from the artistic and culinary experiences of the day.

Day 7: Mount Wellington and Port Arthur

Morning: Begin your day with an exhilarating drive up Mount Wellington to catch a breathtaking sunrise. Marveling at the panoramic views over Hobart and the surrounding landscape.

Breakfast: Enjoy a hearty breakie at Room for a Pony, fueling up for a day of exploration.

Late Morning to Afternoon: Journey to Port Arthur, another UNESCO World Heritage Site, for a guided tour of the historic convict settlement. Cruise along the harbor, immersing yourself in Tasmania's convict past.

Afternoon: Venture to Tasman National Park to explore the Remarkable Cave, a natural marvel carved by the sea. Then, hike the Waterfall Bay Track to Tasman Arch and Devil’s Kitchen, marveling at the coastal scenery.

Evening: Conclude your day with a walk along Pirates Bay and head back towards the city for a picturesque Italian dinner at Cugini along the river in Hobart for sunset. Savor delicious cuisine as you reflect on your East Coast Tasmania adventure.

Despite spending a week exploring the east coast of Tasmania, it's clear that there's still so much more to discover. Whether you're a nature lover, adventure seeker or culture enthusiast, Tasmania promises an unforgettable experience. It's no wonder that visitors find themselves already planning their next trip back to this enchanting island enclave.
