Places to eat & drink in Japan

Four sushi rolls in a black tray with chopsticks

Japan has such a rich variety of cuisine options – it's a must to sample them all!

Kaiseki, a traditional multi-course Japanese meal, it is best enjoyed in Kyoto, where it originated. I recommend Gion Fukushi for an impeccable experience.

Okinomiyaki, a Japanese pancake prepared table-side and covered with toppings and sauces of your choice, originated in Osaka, but Hiroshima also has their take. For a casual and unique dining, Chibo in Osaka is the place to go.

Sushi is obviously the highlight of any Japan trip! I recommend Hanazakura in Osaka, visited by the Foo Fighters, Steven Tyler and other celebrities or Fukuzushi in Tokyo. However, many department stores have sprawling food halls with excellent sushi offerings for something more casual.

Teppanyaki, a form of Japanese hibachi, is plentiful and always an enjoyable, interactive experience. My favorite place is Hinokizaka at The Ritz Carlton Tokyo.

High tea is a great way to get an afternoon boost or rest your feet after sightseeing. The New Otani Hotel in Tokyo has beautiful views of a traditional Japanese garden and offers an opulent tea service.

Tempura, which can be vegetable or seafood based, is a delicious cuisine to sample. Tempura Tenko in Tokyo is my favorite hidden gem.
