Things to do in Costa Rica

Manuel Antonio

1. Manuel Antonio National Park
Manuel Antonio National Park is a must-visit destination for families seeking an unforgettable adventure in Costa Rica. Renowned for its stunning landscapes, the park offers an incredible blend of lush rainforests, white-sand beaches and crystal-clear waters. Families can embark on easy, well-marked hiking trails that wind through the park, providing ample opportunities to spot fascinating wildlife such as playful monkeys, curious sloths and colorful birds.
Pro Tip: You can explore this park on your own or with a guide. I highly recommend hiring a guide. My favorite is Johan Chavez.

2. Beaches
Enjoy the white-sand beaches, such as Playa Espadilla and Playa Manuel Antonio.

3. Water Activities
Don’t miss a waterfall adventure tour with Waterfalls Heaven. This was our family's top pick of everything we did in Costa Rica. Experience the true beauty and adventure of Costa Rica. This is the perfect family adventure through the country's most breathtaking waterfalls. Hike through lush rainforests to discover hidden gems like the majestic Uvita Waterfall. You will love swimming in the crystal-clear pools and soak in the stunning surroundings.
Other options to consider:
- Take a catamaran tour for a chance to see dolphins and whales.
- Try surfing lessons

4. Adventure Tours
Zip-lining through the rainforest canopy with El Santuario. Perfect for families, this adventure takes you soaring through the lush rainforest canopy on some of the longest and highest ziplines in the region. Enjoy breathtaking views, spot exotic wildlife and feel the rush of adrenaline as you zip through the vibrant forest. Safety is a top priority, with professional guides ensuring a secure experience for all ages.
Other options to consider:
- ATV tours, horseback riding or an after-dark jungle walk with Roy Morales.

Arenal/La Fortuna

1. Arenal Volcano
Hike the trails around the Arenal Volcano for spectacular views and a chance to see lava flows.
Pro Tip: Park at the Arenal Observatory Lodge and you can access their trails around the volcano.

2. Hot Springs
Relax in the hot springs at Tabacón or visit other hot springs resorts like Baldi or EcoTermales.
Pro Tip: A lot of the resorts offer day passes to the hot springs, however it is more convenient to stay at a resort that includes the hot springs such as Tabacón Thermal Resort & Spa.

3. La Fortuna Waterfall
A short hike through the jungle leads to this stunning 200-foot waterfall where you can swim in the cool waters.

4. Adventure Activities
Zip-lining, white-water rafting, and canyoning. Explore Arenal Hanging Bridges for a unique view of the rainforest canopy.
Pro Tip: There are guided tours for the hanging bridges, however our family enjoyed the slower pace of exploring this park on our own. A tour is not required, but you do need to book tickets ahead of time to enter the park. You can reserve them here.

5. Lake Arenal
Enjoy windsurfing, kayaking and fishing on this beautiful lake.

Places to eat & drink in Costa Rica

Two glasses of smoothies, one yellow and one berry-colored, with a small wooden board and napkin.

Costa Rican cuisine is a vibrant celebration of fresh ingredients and traditional flavors, embodying the rich agricultural bounty of the region. At the heart of this culinary tapestry is the beloved "casado," a hearty plate featuring rice, black beans, plantains, salad and a choice of protein such as fish, chicken or beef. The simplicity of ingredients highlights the freshness and quality of locally sourced produce.

Gallo pinto, another staple, is a delightful blend of rice and beans, often enjoyed with breakfast alongside eggs, tortillas and a slice of fresh cheese. This dish is a testament to the Costa Rican ethos of wholesome, nourishing meals.

Costa Rica's tropical climate blesses it with an abundance of fresh fruits, adding a sweet touch to the local diet. Pineapples, papayas, mangoes and bananas are enjoyed at their peak ripeness, offering bursts of natural sweetness and juiciness. These fruits are not only savored as snacks but also feature prominently in refreshing beverages, such as smoothies and "batidos," a popular fruit shake.

Seafood lovers will relish the coastal influences in dishes like ceviche, where fresh fish is marinated in citrus juices and mixed with cilantro, onions and peppers. The freshness of the seafood, straight from the pristine waters, ensures a vibrant and zesty culinary experience.

Restaurants to try in Manuel Antonio:

  • Emilio's Café - Known for its fresh seafood, delicious coffee and stunning views over the ocean.

  • Café Milagro - Offers a variety of local dishes with a focus on organic ingredients and a great selection of Costa Rican coffee.

  • El Avión - A unique dining experience in a converted airplane with a lively bar and stunning sunset views.

Restaurants to try in Arenal/La Fortuna

  • Don Rufino - A top-rated restaurant in La Fortuna offering contemporary Costa Rican cuisine with a gourmet twist.

  • Soda Viquez - A local favorite for traditional Costa Rican dishes at affordable prices.

Pro Tip: In Costa Rica, a "soda" refers to a type of small, casual eatery or restaurant that typically serves traditional Costa Rican cuisine at affordable prices. These sodas are often family-owned and operated, offering a cozy and authentic dining experience for locals and tourists alike. Sodas are known for their emphasis on fresh, locally sourced ingredients and simple, hearty dishes like casados, gallo pinto and ceviche. Many sodas also serve refreshing homemade beverages such as natural fruit juices and "refrescos," which are fruit drinks made from fresh fruits blended with water or milk. These establishments are integral to the culinary landscape of Costa Rica, providing a taste of traditional flavors in a friendly and unpretentious setting.

  • Nene's Restaurant - Known for its warm hospitality and delicious steaks, seafood, and local dishes.

Need to Know

Pro Tip: Private or group transportation can be arranged from the airport and between destinations in Costa Rica. If you are a more adventurous traveler, you may prefer to rent your own car. Manuel Antonio is about a 3 hour drive from the San Jose airport and it is about a 5 hour drive between Manuel Antonio and La Fortuna.
