Things to do in Houston, Texas

First-Timer’s Guide to Houston, Texas - Things to do

You’ve landed in Houston! Buckle up because you’ve got a lot of territory to cover and plenty of southern fare to indulge on. But first, go to The Museum of Fine Arts, one of the largest museums in the US. There's almost always a great food truck out front to grab a bite as well! When you’re done with that, attend an outdoor concert or play at the wonderful Miller Outdoor Theater. It’s been around since 1923 and sits in the very beautiful Hermann Park. You can also take some time to check out the Space Center. You can get a firsthand look at where the famous transmission, "Houston, we have a problem," was received.

Go check out Montrose, a Houston neighborhood with serious Austin vibes. Check out the "Houston is Inspired" mural for some instagram opportunities, if that's your thing.

For a venture outside of the city while still being in it, check out Buffalo Bayou, Houston's beautiful natural bayou. Boat tours are easy to book and offer a great mini escape from the bustling city. Another place to take a break is at the Gerald D. Hines Waterwall Park, one of the most chill spots in Houston with a crazy big 64 foot semicircular fountain. It churns through – and recycles – about 11,000 gallons of water per minute!

Day trips

Head down to Galveston Island for 32 miles of beautiful beaches! You can rent a beach cruiser bike and see it all in a fun, new way!

Eat & drink in Houston, Texas

First-Timer’s Guide to Houston, Texas - Eat & drink

La Carafe: A unique, candlelit tavern that's been slinging drinks for 125 years. It's on the National Register for Historic Places!

Ninfa's Original: Great margaritas and they invented fajitas.

Squabble: Small plates for every eater and the gorgeous French cheeseburger, bathed in raclette cheese.

Truth BBQ: There are dozens of bbq joints in Houston, but this one has a special place in my heart. The tater tot casserole can't be missed.

Xochi: True, exceptional Oaxacan cuisine in Houston.

St. Arnold's: A wonderful brewery with a great, family-friendly beer hall.
