Curator’s statement

Eleuthera wasn't initially on my travel radar. However, upon discovering that a hotel I'd had my eye on was nestled on this charming island, we jumped on the chance to explore somewhere new for an annual girls trip — consisting of my sister, mother and myself. Our criteria for the perfect family trip are simple: access to stunning beaches and a range of excursions that offer cultural immersion, natural beauty or adventurous thrills. Little did we know, Eleuthera would exceed all our expectations, delivering an unforgettable experience filled with kind people and unbelievable beauty at every turn!

Things to do in Bahamas

  • Glass Window Bridge — This unique spot allows you to see the stark difference between the light crystal blue waters of the Caribbean and the deep blue waters of the Atlantic clearly. Drive across (when open!) or take a stop at the many lookouts before and after.

  • Rainbow Bay Beach - An easy to access beach with shallow turquoise blue water to explore! Keep an eye out for stingrays, as this beach is noted to have a colony that likes to hang out in these warm, shallow waters.

  • Twin Coves Beach — Off-the-beaten-path beach that has soft waves, protected by the tide pools that sit at the corners. Low tide allows for great walks gathering shells. This almost deserted beach is worth the adventure to get out there!

  • Sapphire Blue Hole — At the northern most area of Eleuthera, this freshwater hole was formed by the collapse of a limestone cavern. This is a popular spot to swim and snorkel. It also has convenient parking close by which is not always the case on the island.

  • Fishing Excursions — A number of fishing companies exist along Eleuthera's long stretch of island. Find an excursion group near your area on the island and explore the beautiful (and plentiful!) Caribbean waters.

  • Pineapple Farm — North of Alicetown, you can find Eleuthera Pineapple Farm Tours right off Queen's Highway. Explore the pineapple fields while learning the history of pineapple farming in Eleuthera and the traditional farming methods that are still in use today. After exploring, shop for fresh pineapples and other locally grown produce.

  • Water Sports — On the Atlantic side of the island, beaches such as Surfer's Beach or Hatchet Bay are great for active water sports such as surfing and kiteboarding. You can take advantage of the calmer waters on the Caribbean side to kayak or paddleboard at the numerous shops and hotels that offer rentals.

  • Snorkeling & Diving — Numerous sites, including Current Cut and Devil's Backbone, are great for exploring the crystal-clear waters, coral reefs, underwater caves and the incredibly colorful marine life.

Day Trips:

Spanish Wells & Dunmore Town are a very short ferry ride away on the west and east side, respectively, of North Eleuthera. Spanish Wells has its own pig beach that, if you're lucky, you can catch sea turtles that also frequent the same waters! Dunmore Town is a quaint, no car island that has some of the world's best Pink Sands Beach.

Places to eat & drink in Bahamas

  • The Front Porch (Alice Town) - Seafood in a low-key establishment right off Queen's Highway with a great back patio & friendly staff.

  • Mel's Snack Shack (Central Eleuthera) - right off Queen's Highway for a quick lunch of fried Conch or other beach favorites.

  • 1648 (Governor's Harbour) - Located within the French Leave Resort with a beautiful deck overlooking the Harbor.

  • La Bougainvillea Restaurant (North Palmetto Point) - A great beachside restaurant at a beautiful hotel that has great staff and a wonderful farm to table menu.

  • Buccaneer Club (Governor's Harbour) - open for breakfast, lunch and dinner with an extensive bar selection in a great central location.

  • Twin Brothers (Alice Town) - Great location for takeout or a casual hang in their wonderful backyard space (including some wonderful daiquiris!)

  • George's Bar & Grill (South Eleuthera) - Waterside restaurant for casual Bahamian fare, drinks and friendly Bahamian bartenders.

  • Da Perk (Governor's Harbour) - convenient coffee shop that serves breakfast & lunch with beautiful views of the harbor and outside seating.

  • LeoRose Sunset Beach Bar & Grill (Central Eleuthera) - This beach front, roadside bar with lunch and a wide variety of drink options.
