Advisor - Summer in Colorado Springs: Top Spots from a Local Explorer
Curator’s statement

Colorado Springs became a memorable place for me during a summer internship, where I had time to really get to know the area. I loved having endless hiking trails and scenic spots to explore, all surrounded by views that were nothing short of breathtaking. Each weekend felt like an adventure, whether I was discovering a new trail or relaxing at a local café. Colorado Springs has a way of blending rugged outdoor experiences with a laid-back vibe that made my time there unforgettable.

Things to do in Colorado Springs

Red Rock Canyon open space
  • Garden of the Gods: This stunning park is an absolute must for any visit to Colorado Springs. With its massive red sandstone formations and the backdrop of Pikes Peak, it’s breathtaking from every angle. Whether you’re hiking the trails, taking photos at the famous Balanced Rock or just soaking in the views, it’s a place you’ll want to remember.

  • Red Rock Canyon Open Space: A less crowded alternative to Garden of the Gods, Red Rock Canyon Open Space has scenic trails winding through striking red rocks and wildflower fields. It’s a peaceful spot for morning hikes or an afternoon of exploring.

  • Manitou Incline: If you’re up for a challenge, this hike is legendary! Climbing 2,744 steps straight up can be intense, but the views of Colorado Springs from the top are completely worth it. The incline isn’t for the faint of heart, but it’s an experience you won’t forget.

  • Broadmoor Seven Falls: Known as the “grandest mile of scenery,” this series of waterfalls tucked into a scenic canyon is a fantastic way to spend an afternoon. Climb the stairway beside the falls, enjoy the views or even zipline for an extra thrill. Adult tickets are $19, which includes a shuttle ride to and from the parking lot.

  • Cheyenne Mountain Zoo: A unique zoo experience located on a mountainside with views over the city. Feeding the giraffes here is a must, and the alpine setting gives it a special feel that’s hard to find at other zoos.

  • Cheyenne Cañon: Another beautiful hiking area, Cheyenne Cañon has trails for every skill level. The Mt. Cutler trail has one of my favorite views of the Broadmoor Hotel and the surrounding mountains.

  • The Broadmoor Hotel: Even if you’re not staying here, the Broadmoor is worth a visit. This historic hotel feels like stepping back in time with its luxurious grounds, multiple dining options and activities like bowling and a world-class spa. Perfect for an elegant afternoon or evening out.

  • Pikes Peak: Known as “America’s Mountain,” Pikes Peak is a landmark you can’t miss. You can hike the trail to the summit if you’re up for it, or take the cog railway or drive up to experience the panoramic views and the famous donuts at the summit café.

  • Manitou Springs: This quirky town nearby has an artistic spirit and historic charm, with eclectic shops, cafes and natural mineral springs scattered throughout. It’s the perfect place for a leisurely afternoon stroll.

  • Old Colorado City: Colorado Springs’ original city center, Old Colorado City is filled with charm and history. Enjoy art galleries, boutique shops and great restaurants in this scenic neighborhood.

  • US Olympic & Paralympic Museum: The museum offers an inspiring, interactive experience celebrating America’s top athletes. Walk through Olympic history, try out virtual training simulations and leave feeling motivated and amazed.

Day trip

  • Paint Mines Interpretive Park: Just 50 minutes away, Paint Mines feels like another planet with its colorful, layered rock formations in pinks, oranges and yellows. The quiet trails and unique landscape make it a perfect place for a peaceful escape and some stunning photos.

  • Denver: A bit over an hour north, Denver has something for everyone. Explore art museums, breweries and top-notch dining, or head to Red Rocks for an unforgettable concert experience against the iconic red rock backdrop.

  • Boulder: 1.5 hours away, Boulder is a great mix of hip city culture and scenic landscapes. You’ll find eclectic shops, vibrant cafes and beautiful trails in the surrounding foothills — ideal for a relaxed but active day.

  • Arkansas River Tours: If you’re up for a bit of adventure, head 1-1.5 hours to the Arkansas River for a day of white-water rafting! They offer trips with different levels of intensity, and I tried their Browns Canyon Rafting trip — a thrilling, full-day experience that was truly unforgettable. Tours are available April-early September.
