Day 1: explore Old San Juan – a journey back in time

Morning: Castillo San Felipe del Morro

Kickstart your Puerto Rican adventure with a morning exploration of Old San Juan. The cobblestone streets and colorful colonial buildings are a photographer's dream. Start your day with a visit to the Castillo San Felipe del Morro, a historic fort built by the Spanish in the 16th century to defend Puerto Rico from invaders. The stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean and the old town are breathtaking.

Afternoon: Castillo San Cristobal

Next, head to Castillo San Cristobal, another historic fortress that offers a different perspective of Old San Juan. The fort is massive and provides insight into Puerto Rico’s military past, complete with tunnels and pathways to explore.

Evening: dinner in Old San Juan

End your day with a delicious dinner in one of the charming restaurants in Old San Juan. The area is home to many local eateries offering traditional Puerto Rican dishes like mofongo and tostones.

Day 2: La Cabezas de San Juan Nature Reserve and Bioluminescent Bay

Morning: ferry to La Cabezas

After breakfast, make your way to the Fajardo Ferry Terminal to catch a boat to La Cabezas de San Juan Nature Reserve. The scenic ferry ride will give you beautiful views of Puerto Rico’s coastline.

Midday: explore the nature reserve & lighthouse

Once you arrive, take a guided tour of La Cabezas Nature Reserve, which is home to a variety of ecosystems, from mangrove forests to coastal dry forests. One of the highlights of the reserve is the Faro de Fajardo, a historic lighthouse with panoramic views of the coastline and nearby islands.

Evening: bioluminescent bay

As night falls, prepare to witness one of nature’s most magical phenomena — bioluminescent bays. The Laguna Grande Bioluminescent Bay near Fajardo is one of the brightest in the world. Paddle through glowing waters in a kayak or boat as the microscopic organisms in the water light up with every movement. It’s an unforgettable experience!

Day 3: caves, pools and relaxation

Morning: hike to Arenales Caves

On your third day, take a short drive to the Arenales Caves on the island’s north coast. This off-the-beaten-path adventure involves a scenic hike through a tropical forest to reach the caves. There you can explore limestone formations and see bats, stalactites and stalagmites. Bring a flashlight for better cave exploration.

Afternoon: relax by the pool

After your adventurous hike, head back to your hotel for a well-deserved rest. Spend the afternoon lounging by the pool, sipping a piña colada or soaking up the sun.

Evening: dinner in Old San Juan

For a change of pace, enjoy a leisurely dinner back in Old San Juan. There are plenty of options here, from seafood restaurants to charming cafes offering local specialties. After dinner, take a stroll along the colorful streets and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere of the city.

Day 4: catamaran day trip – island hopping adventure

Morning: catamaran tour

Today, embark on an unforgettable catamaran tour. Book a guided tour that will take you island-hopping around Puerto Rico. You’ll sail through crystal-clear waters, stopping to snorkel or swim at secluded beaches, such as Icacos Island or Palomino Island. The boat tour typically includes snacks, drinks and the opportunity to spot marine life, including turtles and colorful fish.

Afternoon: island exploration

Explore the islands, either on foot or by relaxing on the sandy shores. Many of these islands have calm, shallow waters, making them ideal for swimming and snorkeling. Enjoy the serenity of these remote locations and unwind in the tropical surroundings.

Evening: return to Fajardo

After a day of island hopping, return to Fajardo and enjoy a sunset drink at a local bar or restaurant.

Day 5: El Yunque National Forest – Puerto Rico’s lush rainforest

Morning: hike to waterfalls in El Yunque

No trip to Puerto Rico would be complete without visiting El Yunque National Forest, the only tropical rainforest in the US National Forest System. Start the day with a visit to La Mina Falls, one of the most famous waterfalls in the park. A short hike through the lush forest will lead you to this stunning 35-foot waterfall where you can take a refreshing swim.

Afternoon: river swimming & exploration

Spend the afternoon exploring more of El Yunque’s trails and rivers. There are several other waterfalls and swimming spots within the forest, such as Juan Diego Falls or El Yunque River. The park is home to unique wildlife, including the endangered Puerto Rican parrot.

Evening: dinner in Rio Grande

On your way back, stop in Rio Grande for a relaxed dinner at a local restaurant that offers traditional Puerto Rican cuisine.

Day 6: visit Survival Beach – secluded beach adventure

Morning: drive to the west coast

On Day Six, head to Puerto Rico’s west coast to explore some of the island’s less-visited gems. Make your way to Survival Beach, located near Isabela. This remote and pristine beach is a hidden gem, accessible via a hike through coastal terrain. The beach is known for its dramatic cliffs, rock formations and clear blue waters.

Afternoon: caves and rock formations

Take some time to explore the surrounding caves and rock formations that line the beach. You’ll find natural pools and sheltered caves perfect for a peaceful escape.

Evening: return to San Juan

After your adventure, drive back to San Juan and relax at your hotel before your last evening in Puerto Rico. Consider having a farewell dinner in Condado or Santurce, both of which offer vibrant dining scenes.

Day 7: head home

Morning: last-minute shopping

On your final day in Puerto Rico, take the morning to do some last-minute shopping in Old San Juan or Plaza Las Americas mall. Pick up local souvenirs like Puerto Rican coffee, handmade crafts or artisanal jewelry.

Afternoon: departure

Pack your bags, check out of your hotel and head to Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport for your flight home. Take one last look at Puerto Rico’s stunning coastline as you bid adieu to this beautiful Caribbean island.
