Curator’s statement

As a Houstonian and a mom of two toddlers, I am always looking for fun and convenient destinations for family getaways. In my quest to find easy weekend vacations that are just a road trip away, we have stayed at some wonderful Hill Country resorts that offer something for every family member. While these resorts are just a short drive away for many Texans, they can also be a nice reprieve for out of state travelers from the popular busy cities they might be there to explore like Austin and San Antonio.

Resorts in Texas Hill Country

Hyatt Regency Lost Pines Resort and Spa

This Hill Country property is located just about 45 minutes from Downtown Austin in Bastrop, Texas. Your family will never be bored on this 405-acre property that offers a waterpark, Lazy River (which my kids could not get enough of), horseback riding, petting zoo, archery, lawn games and daily crafts and activities such as dive-in movies and free s'mores around the fire pit every night! Looking for some adult time? Enjoy a spa treatment, lay by the adults only pool or play a game of golf on their 18-hole signature course, while the kids are busy at Camp Hyatt (ages 3 to 12, additional fee). There are several different restaurants on property with plenty of food options for kids. Holiday weekends usually offer a fun evening dinner event. During our Labor Day stay, they put on an outdoor BBQ with a delicious buffet, live music, and a bounce house for the kids. We had a blast!

La Cantera Resort and Spa

Just 30 minutes north of the San Antonio Riverwalk, this ranch-chic property offers some of the best hill country sunset views around. Endless family fun can be found here with their kids pool that features two slides and a splash area, meeting furry friends at their "Zoomagination" events in the lobby, Family Movie Nights, Bingo, s'mores around the fire pit and an arcade filled with games and prizes. If you want to enjoy the stunning sunset views at the adults only infinity pool, spend some time at the spa, or take a private golf lesson, drop the kids off at the Kids Club (additional fee applies), where they will learn about nature, and participate in crafts like tie-dying t-shirts and slime making. There are plenty of restaurants on property ranging from steak to poolside bites, a grab and go market (with ice cream!), and a juicery. You also never know who you will run into on the property grounds - we saw a beautiful bobcat roaming through the golf course during our last stay! In case you're up for a little adventure, La Cantera also offers complimentary shuttle services to Six Flags Fiesta Texas which is right next door.

Omni Barton Creek

This upscale retreat, tucked away in residential hills of Austin, is definitely a family favorite destination for Texans. Families will have plenty to do together with pools overlooking the hill country, a miniature golf course, nature trails, game lounge with air hockey and foosball, nightly s'mores, and scheduled kids activities such as bounce house fun, craft making, glitter tattoo artists, and more. With Wellness as a main focus, they also have the Omni Junior Chefs Program which offers kids health snacks, a lunch tote and activity book about healthy eating. There is also a spa, golf course, and adults only pool if you are kid-free. This summer, their Kids Eat Free promotion is for Kids 10 and under and will be running through September 29th, 2024.
