Things to do in Puerto Plata
Dominican Republic is known for its beautiful beaches, friendly people, and adventure opportunities. Puerto Plata is located on the northern coast of the Dominican Republic. It is a beautiful and vibrant destination known for its stunning beaches (nearly 50 miles), historical sites, and lively culture.
Savvy explorer Christopher Columbus knew there was much to discover on this northern Atlantic coastline–eventually finding gold deposits–when he glimpsed it from his ship in 1492. Upon his arrival, he named the region “Puerto Plata” (Silver Port in Spanish) due to the sparkling reflection of the sun on the pristine ocean waters along the coastline and mountains. The area is also known as the Amber Coast for its rich and rare amber.
The main airport serving the area is the Gregorio Luperon International Airport (POP) with direct flights from the United States with American Airlines, United, Jet blue and Delta.
The most popular braces in Puerto Plata are:
Playa Dorada is known for its golden sands and clear blue waters. It's a great spot for swimming, sunbathing, and water sports. If you search for the Top Beaches in Dominican Republic, Playa Dorada is on every list!!
Sosua Beach: Famous for its calm, turquoise waters, Sosua Beach is ideal for snorkeling and diving. The vibrant coral reefs and diverse marine life make it a must-visit for water enthusiasts.
Playa Bergantin: If you’re looking for some seclusion while in the Puerto Plata area, Playa Bergantin is the place to go. This wild beach is virtually untouched and has maintained its natural beauty since it’s still relatively unknown among tourists.
Many big resorts and hotels are located on these beaches. For all-inclusive lovers Iberostar is a great choice, while for those looking for a more intimate option Hotel Boutique Casa Colonial Beach and Spa is highly recommended.
But there is more to see and experience in Puerto Plata besides beautiful beaches:
