Curator’s statement

London is a great European city and full of adventures for kids. From cultural experiences, world class sporting events, parks and more, it is perfect for a family trip. We visited as a family recently and spent five days in this amazing place. Here are some of my favorite finds for the family who wants to level up their fun factor.

Things to do in London

Museums are great places to visit but with kids I know my limits. Our favorite things in London were unique experiences and here are the ones that made it to the top of our list.

FOR THE ANTI “MUSEUM” FAMILY

London Eye: Known as one of the tallest ferris wheels built, for 30 minutes you will be on top of the world in this attraction not to be missed. Pro tip: Try to visit on a clear day so you can see more from the top and book your tickets ahead of time. Location: South Bank.

Shard: The view of the Shard is iconic but a view from the Shard is inspiring. Visit here for 360-degree views of London for up to 40 miles and grab that glass of champs at the bar on the 69th level. Location: Adjacent to London Bridge.

Arcelormittal Orbit: One of our favorite finds. Head to the top via the lifts to check out amazing views. If you are daring, take the world’s tallest and longest slide to the bottom. Not feeling that slide? Take the 455 steps down to the ground. Pro tip: Do both! You won’t regret it. Note: Currently closed for a refresh, reopening Summer 2024.

Tower Bridge: You will learn so much history and the glass floor walkways between the North and South towers were so fun to experience. Pro tip: Visit this attraction when it first opens in the morning to beat the crowds. Location: Central London.

Postal Museum: A great find for smaller kids or the kids at heart as the postal museum has so much to offer. Ride a train through an underground tunnel and learn about the history of the mail system in London.

EXPLORE MORE

Shoreditch: Take a walk through this vibrant neighborhood in the East End of London. It is known for street art, a hipster dining scene, coffee shops and more. Be on the lookout for some of Banksy’s early works of art.

Hop on Hop Off bus (HOHO bus): A fun way to see the city, take in the sights and take some time to rest your feet. The fun part about the HOHO bus is you can jump on and off at your leisure.

Ride the Tube: It’s always fun to ride the train (especially with kids) and London’s underground system is on point. Between the tube and the bus routes it’s easy to get around this city. Pro tip: Kids 10 and under ride for free.

Leake Street Tunnel: If you are into street art these former railway arches are the place to see the latest. It is a legal graffiti wall so if you are so inclined grab your spray paint supplies and leave your mark.

FOR THE FIFA OBSESSED

Wembley Stadium Tour: Home to major concerts and live sporting events but you can also get a behind the scenes tour of the stadium which does not disappoint. The stadium is outside London and can be reached by the tube. Pro Tip: This can easily be a half-day adventure so make sure to leave enough time.

Attend a Football match: There is nothing like being at a live football (or soccer if you are American) match in Europe. The fans make it so entertaining and a bucket list experience for sure. Arsenal, Chelsea, West Ham and Tottenham are a few of the premier teams to score tickets to while visiting London.

Hang with the local fans: Head to a pub and watch a football match with the locals. Many restaurants are showing games and are family-friendly. We had a blast striking up conversations while watching our favorite teams.

FOR A SCENE

Sketch: My favorite unique find in all of London. It is a one of a kind place showcasing five restaurants and bars all distinct with food and decor. Try breakfast at the Glade, afternoon tea or dinner at the Gallery but don’t forget to check out the iconic bathrooms. Pro tip: Reservations open three months prior.

Jacuzzi: Big Mamma Group is the owner of this spot along with over 10 venues across London and Paris. They are known for good Italian food, instagrammable decor and needing fast reservation grabbing fingers when time slots open. We loved this place for a late lunch and had fun watching my nine-year-old discover disco toilet bathrooms. Pro tip: Reservations open 20 days prior at 9 a.m. (London time) - Make sure you book when they open to secure the best times. Location: West London.

Ave Mario: Another Big Mamma group fab find. Pizza, Pasta, cheese wheels, yes please! Pro tip: Reservations open 37 days prior at 9 a.m. (London time) - Location: Covent Garden.

Brewdog: The perfect casual spot. From Burgers and Brews, a two-floor slide, a bowling alley, a Mister Softee ice cream truck, everyone has what they need for a great night. Pro Tip: Hit up neighborhood favs: London Eye Leake Street Tunnel before dinner. Location: Waterloo.

Darwin Brasserie: Having trouble getting tickets to the Sky Garden? Combine the attraction with breakfast here for the perfect combo and you do not have to buy a ticket to the Sky Garden. Location: Central London.

FOR THE SWEET TOOTH

The Knot Churros: With the tag line: I SEE IT. I LIKE IT. I WANT IT. I EAT IT, I knew we would fall in love with this place. And that we did. We tried to get back there a second time but just ran out of time. It’s a must visit for anyone who loves sweets and loves to share them on the ‘gram. Location: South Kensington.

EL&N Cafe: Known as the world’s most Instagrammable cafe and lifestyle brand. Stop in for a Supreme croissant, coffee and a photo of course! Multiple locations across London.

Peggy Porschen Belgravia: If you love pink these are your people. Head here for breakfast or afternoon sweets and tea. Location: Near Victoria station.
