Things to do in Aspen, Colorado
Aspen offers a diverse range of hiking trails for all skill levels. Whether you're looking for a quick nature walk or a challenging mountain trek, there's something for everyone. Let's explore some of the best hikes in the area:
Easy Trails
The Grottos Trail is a short, enjoyable hike that's perfect for families with kids. This half-mile loop features several beautiful water features, including ice caves and cascading waterfalls. It's a refreshing walk, especially on hot summer days. Remember to wear sturdy shoes, as the trail can be slippery near the water features.
If you're looking for something quick and convenient, try the White River Ajax Trail. This easy out-and-back trail starts right in downtown Aspen, making it perfect for a quick escape into nature. As you stroll along, you'll enjoy views of Aspen Mountain and the Roaring Fork River. It's an excellent option for acclimating to Aspen's altitude or for a leisurely walk between other activities.
Moderate Hikes
For those seeking a bit more challenge, the Crater Lake Trail offers stunning views of the iconic Maroon Bells. This 3.5-mile out-and-back trail starts at the Maroon Lake parking area and takes you through aspen groves and wildflower meadows. Keep in mind that from mid-June through September, you can only access the trailhead via the Maroon Creek Shuttle. It's best to arrive early to secure your spot.
The Conundrum Creek Day Hike is another moderate option, stretching 3.6 miles out and back. You'll wander through colorful wildflower meadows and aspen forests, with breathtaking mountain vistas throughout. While moderate, there is some elevation gain, so be sure to bring plenty of water and sunscreen.
For a short but steep adventure, try the Hanging Lake Trail. Although only 3.1 miles round-trip, this trail does have a lot of elevation gain. Luckily, you'll reach stunning waterfalls and a crystal-clear lake at the top as your reward. Don't forget to secure a permit before your visit by going to Glenwood Springs or calling (970) 384-6309.
Challenging Routes
For a true challenge, tackle the Ute Trail. This 5.3-mile out-and-back trail is a local favorite for its demanding ascent and panoramic views of Aspen from the top. It's mostly uphill, providing a great workout with a spectacular payoff. Bring trekking poles for the steep descent and start early to avoid afternoon thunderstorms.
Epic Adventure: Crested Butte to Aspen
For those seeking a multi-day adventure without sacrificing comfort, consider the Crested Butte to Aspen trek. This 10.2-mile point-to-point hike over West Maroon Pass offers some of Colorado's most breathtaking scenery.
To embark on this journey, first make a shuttle reservation for the Maroon Lake Trailhead in Aspen, as it's only accessible by shuttle. Begin on the Crested Butte side along Schofield Pass, which you can reach by car or shuttle service. Hike to West Maroon Pass, then continue down the Aspen side of the pass until you reach Maroon Lake Trailhead after 10.2 miles total.
From there, take the shuttle to Aspen Highlands. After your long day of hiking, check into the luxurious Ritz-Carlton Club, Aspen Highlands for a well-deserved rest. Enjoy the comforts of this high-end accommodation for a night or two before making the return journey to Crested Butte. **You can also take a bus to downtown from the Aspen Highlands and stay there instead.
The biggest draw of this hike is undoubtedly the stunning mountain scenery you'll encounter along the way. It's a unique way to experience the beauty of the Colorado Rockies while still enjoying some luxury.
Remember to always check current trail conditions, obtain necessary permits and practice Leave No Trace principles. Happy hiking in Aspen!
