Okahirongo Elephant Lodge is undeniably a beautiful camp.
Curator’s statement

Okahirongo Elephant Lodge, Namibia sits in an unforgettable experience setting in the heart of the Purros Conservancy in Kaokoland. It is home to the last true wildness perched by the desert. Ideal for true nature lovers, families, groups and honeymooners, one rarely gets to enjoy the complete silence and just see nature as it is. From the lodge, you can see the elephants at this sanctuary where literally no threats to their existence are of concern. With the raw natural desert beauty, a visit to the nearby Himba village can be arranged to see how these semi-nomadic, desert-dwelling people live. I would suggest doing some activities offered here, such as game safari, and taking a trip to the phenomenal clay castles of the Hoarusib River Valley. Plus, there is a special offering for five nights across the safari lodges and camps in Southern Africa and receive your 5th night free. In general, this lodge is suitable for the ultimate comfort, offering many activities. You will have the best amenities and a sustainable way of living with extra care at your side.

You will arrive in the capital, Windhoek's Hosea Kutako International Airport. After checkout, you will likely hire a private driver or find a bus that can potentially take you to the lodge.

Day 2: Scenic drive

Clay castles are unusual natural rock formations in the Skeleton Coast.

On this day, you can embark on a scenic drive accompanied by the knowledgeable local guides. Get one step closer to the mesmerizing landscape, with a stop for a picnic lunch. Here you can see the river etched deep into the mountains where it forges remarkable cliffs where the natural phenomenon known as the "Clay Castles" are ancient structures standing hundreds of meters tall.

Day 3: Sundowner at the dunes

Experience a sundowner as you watch the sunset.

Take time to relax on a tour of the area by doing a Sundowner, where the sun casts upon the dunes. Your guide will arrange refreshments so you can sip on a delicious Sundowner. This is a chance to unwind in the ambience of the lodge's sun deck or at one of many nearby picturesque locations.

Day 4: Clay castles of the Hoarusib River Valley

The Hoarusib River is known for its dramatic landscapes and ephemeral flow.

If you like history, take a trip to the clay castles of the Hoarusib River Valley. These geological formations rise from the desert landscape and resemble ancient castles sculpted by nature. The distinctive circular shapes range in size from a few meters to several meters in diameter. Providing for a great picture or Instagram moment.

Day 5: Puros wildlife

Elephants at Puros Conservancy

The main thing is Puros Conservancy's wildlife opportunities that can be viewed from the lodge's sun deck or pool. With expert Himba guides, you will embark on captivating morning treks or afternoon game drives to see a diverse array of desert wildlife. Here are the elephants adapted to desert terrain, iconic giraffes, Hartmann's mountain zebras and a rich assortment of antelopes that include the gemsbok, springbok, steenbok and kudu.

Additional days

Houses at the Himba Village

This trip cannot be complete without seeing how the Himba live. These ancient semi-nomadic people are desert dwellers, and maintain old traditions that never change. Visit an authentic Himba village and meet the tribespeople, taste their food offerings and appreciate the culture. See how they have adapted to desert life, where their unusual skincare routine can have you rethinking your own regimen.

Need to know

There are two types of stays:

Suites: The exclusive lodge has only seven well-appointed suites, each designed as a sanctuary from the harsh desert environment.

Private Villa: This is a villa consisting of two ensuite bedrooms featuring large free-standing baths. It encourages rest and relaxation with a private terrace, open bar and boma.
