Things to do in Tulum

The Mayan Ruins stand at the edge of the ocean on a crag-filled hilltop as waves lap the shore on a cloudy day.

There are now flights from many US cities to Tulum. If the timing or number of stops doesn't work for you, you can alternatively fly into Cancun airport and take a 1.5-hour taxi ride to Tulum.

Relax on the white powdery sand beaches with shades of blue water in front of you. The water is so clear you can watch the flora and fish while swimming in the ocean, with the naked eye.

Swim in cenotes

I visited Casa Tortuga, a cenote featured in "National Geographic." This site has two open-water and two closed-water cenotes. The closed-water cenotes provide a unique experience of swimming through caves. While the open-water cenotes are large and offer the adventurous option of jumping from heights of 15-20 feet. Be sure to wear water shoes to avoid sharp stones and bring a waterproof case for your phone to take pictures inside the cenote. Don't forget reef-safe sunscreen.

Visit the Mayan Ruins

In ancient times, Tulum was a hub for international trade. The ruins are strategically located above the water to monitor enemy movement. The views from the ruins are stunning, offering a captivating sight of the calm and serene blue waters.

Snorkeling in Akumal

Snorkeling in Akumal is highly recommended due to its high concentration of sea turtles in the Riviera. During my 45-minute experience, I saw five sea turtles. It's best to book a snorkeling trip early in the morning to avoid other divers ruffling the sand.

Scuba diving

Cozumel, a short drive from Tulum or Playa del Carmen (1.5-2 hours drive), is one of the best places for scuba diving in the Mexican Caribbean. The underwater scenery is spectacular, with clear sunshine making the corals, fish, and flora appear vibrant.

Transportation

There is no Uber or Lyft in Tulum. Cab prices are not fixed or metered. Try your luck bargaining with cab drivers or book local cabs from your hotel or rent a car for the duration of your stay.

Day trips

Chichen Itza is one of the wonders of the world. Its unique fusion of construction techniques from Mayan and Central Mexican culture sets it apart. You can even climb it! Be sure to go early to beat the crowds.

Places to eat & drink in Tulum

Ravioli at Maratea artfully plated on a wooden table surrounded by silverware.

Tulum offers exceptional food, with fresh and vibrant ingredients. The greens have an exciting crunch.

Lunch

  • Burrito Amor: This place serves one of the best burritos I have eaten in North America. It has a cool vibe, and the flavors are delicious.

Dinner

  • Ilios: This Greek restaurant in the heart of Tulum boasts amazing décor and equally impressive food. The Tyri Feta Cauliflower was delicious!

  • Kengai: Offering great Asian cuisine with delicately balanced flavors, this restaurant has plenty of options for vegetarians and vegans. The dessert "Kitzia" is visually appealing and decadent in taste.

  • Maratea: The restaurant is known for its delicious Mediterranean food. I was also impressed when the server recommended trying reposado (aged tequila) in a classic Paloma after noting my dislike for blanco tequila. Since then, Paloma has become one of my favorite cocktails.

Need to know

Tulum boasts many boutiques and eco-friendly hotels. If you need air conditioning, be sure to inform your advisor, as many hotels do not offer this amenity.
