Things to do in Kaua'i

Aerial view of the island of Kauai on a helicopter/plane tour.

Hanalei Bay: Want to soak in the beauty and relax near calm waters, look no further than Hanalei Bay. This beach is the perfect location to relax all day or to unwind after adventuring the island. The calm waters make it a great spot for swimming, but you can also see some beginner surfing. Sunset here is absolutely stunning and a must-see.

Waimea Canyon in Kōkeʻe State Park: Known as the Grand Canyon of the Pacific, this is a must-do while visiting the island of Kauai. No reservation is necessary, but it is paid parking. When visiting the state park, there are multiple places to stop to take in the views. Make sure not to miss the Red Dirt Waterfall - a small, but unique waterfall in the park.

Explore Hanalei Town: There’s no shortage of surf shops, restaurants and boutiques in Hanalei Town. Take some time to explore the area and grab a shave ice.

Hāʻena Beach: Another stunning beach with breathtaking views. Nothing beats lounging on the beach while taking in the views of the Nāpali coast. The calm water at this beach makes it perfect for swimming and snorkeling.

Helicopter/Plane Tour: There are so many ways to see the Nāpali Coast and the island of Kauai but one of my favorites is by air. The views are unforgettable and nothing beats being shown the island by a local.

Kalalau Trail Hike: This hike is not for the faint of heart, but it is definitely worth the trek! Along the Nāpali Coast, this hike can be broken up into parts. If you are feeling adventurous (and are a very experienced hiker) you can get a permit to hike the entire 11 mile trail. This is not a day hike and will require camping. If you want to just get a taste of what the trail has to offer, you can go 2 miles from Ke’e Beach to Hanakapi’ai. Though a much shorter hike, it still requires some skill and planning. If conditions have been too wet, there is the possibility that there are areas that are unsafe to cross. Be aware and make sure to do your research! The State Park does require a permit, so make sure you get a reservation!

Princeville Farmers Markets: One thing Princeville has no shortage of is farmers markets and artists markets. We experienced multiple things throughout the week we stayed. This is a great way to meet some locals, get great food and experience more of the Hawaiian culture. If you’re lucky, you may be like us and get to see an authentic fire dance.

Kayak/Paddle Board the River: Another method of exploring the island is by Kayak or Paddle Board. The Hanalei River offers routes to the beach or wildlife rescue.

Places to eat & drink in Kaua'i

Seafood, salads & breakfast in a simple, laid-back restaurant.

Holey Grail: The most delicious Taro Donuts you will ever eat. We may have stopped here 3–4 times on our trip.

The Hanalei Dolphin: Delicious seafood and sushi - a pricier stop, but completely worth it.

Tahiti Nui: A laid back restaurant with casual vibes and a great menu! Mai Tai is a must try!

Hanalei Bread Company: In the heart of Hanalei Town, a great outdoor breakfast spot! We loved eating breakfast and taking in the view of Hanalei Town.

Wishing Well Shave Ice: Lot of options for massive Shave Ice! Large enough to split, but it is so good you won’t want to!

AMA: A gorgeous Ramen bar. The atmosphere is unbeatable with incredible views.

Aloha Juice Bar: You can’t go wrong with Acai bowls and smoothies in Hawaii. This is a great stop to grab a refreshing snack to go!

Food Trucks: Hanalei Town has no shortage of food trucks and they’ve never missed. Food trucks are a perfect casual stop when you’re not quite ready for a sit down meal.
