Things to do in Japan

The iconic Golden Pavilion in Kyoto, reflecting on a tranquil pond amidst manicured trees.

It wouldn't be spring in Japan without seeing the iconic cherry blossoms, or sakura. Locals and visitors alike gather in parks, gardens and along riverbanks to admire the fleeting beauty of these delicate flowers. Tokyo's Ueno Park and Kyoto's Maruyama Park are particularly famous for their breathtaking displays of cherry blossoms, offering the perfect backdrop for picnics and leisurely strolls. Spring isn't only for the sakura — it is also the start of festival season, which provides an amazing glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of the country. Cultural centers such as Tokyo and Kyoto are bustling with busy festival calendars to check out!

  • Tokyo, Japan
Tokyo is the capital of Japan and hosts two international airports. I recommend flying into Haneda (HND) when possible because it’s a quick 30 minutes to an hour from Tokyo, while Narita (NRT), Tokyo's other airport, is around an hour and a half or more, depending on your mode of transport. Shibuya and Shinjuku are great options for areas to stay if you want to be in the center of the action and excitement of Tokyo, while Ginza is another very nice and centrally located neighborhood that has a lot of shopping and is known for being glamorous. Let's not forget to mention Shinjuku is an amazing area to admire the cherry blossoms!

  • Visit Meiji Jingu Shrine/Yoyogi Park
Stretch your legs after your long flight by taking a scenic walk through the grounds of Meiji Jingu Shrine and/or Yoyogi Park (next to each other). At Meiji Jingu, you’ll find a lush forest and walking path along with a beautiful shrine; at Yoyogi Park, you’ll find a beautiful park with cherry blossoms (if you're going around March/April) and tranquil ponds. Both are great places to find some peace and quiet in the middle of the bustling city. The shrine closes at sunset.

  • Kyoto, Japan
Kyoto is one of the best places to travel in Japan, unique for its ancient tradition and charm. Wander through the city's bamboo forests, serene gardens and historic temples. Partake in traditional tea ceremonies, explore wooden Machiya houses or indulge in exquisite kaiseki dining experiences. Kyoto's picturesque streets, adorned with cherry blossoms in spring and colorful foliage in autumn, provide a romantic backdrop for leisurely strolls and plenty of photo opportunities. Whether walking along the philosopher's path or admiring the grandeur of Kinkaku-ji Temple, Kyoto is one of the best places to travel to, guaranteeing to leave you with memories amidst its timeless beauty and tranquility.

  • Experience the breathtaking views of wisteria blooms
Want to see more of what Japan has to offer?! Japan in May is a magical time that offers a blend of great weather, vibrant festivals and stunning natural beauty. It is an ideal month for travelers to experience the country's rich culture and breathtaking landscapes. With the cherry blossoms' fleeting beauty giving way to lush greenery and the excitement of Golden Week, there's no shortage of activities and sights to enjoy.

  • While the cherry blossoms may have faded, May introduces the mesmerizing beauty of wisteria blooms. Places like the Ashikaga Flower Park in Tochigi and the Kawachi Fujien Wisteria Garden in Fukuoka showcase these enchanting flowers in spectacular displays. Walking beneath tunnels of cascading purple and white wisteria is a magical experience not to be missed.
