Need to know
Before embarking on your journey to Türkiye, it's helpful to familiarize yourself with some key aspects of the country to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience.
Money:
The currency used in Türkiye is the Turkish Lira (TRY). While major credit cards are widely accepted in tourist areas, it's advisable to carry some cash, especially for small purchases and in more rural areas. ATMs are readily available in cities and towns, allowing you to withdraw Turkish Lira as needed.
Personal Manners:
Turkish culture places a strong emphasis on hospitality and respect. It's customary to greet people with a handshake and maintain eye contact during conversations. When visiting someone's home, it's polite to bring a small gift, such as pastries or flowers. Additionally, removing your shoes before entering a home or mosque is considered respectful.
Important Phrases:
While many Turks speak English, learning a few basic Turkish phrases can go a long way in enhancing your interactions with locals. "Merhaba" (hello), "teşekkür ederim" (thank you), and "hoşça kal" (goodbye) are commonly used greetings. Learning numbers and basic directions can also be helpful for navigating and shopping.
Clothing Customs:
Türkiye is a diverse country with varying climates, so it's important to pack clothing suitable for the season and region you're visiting. In general, modest clothing is appreciated, especially when visiting religious sites or rural areas. Women may choose to dress modestly by covering their shoulders and knees, while men typically wear long pants and avoid sleeveless shirts in these contexts.
By familiarizing yourself with these key aspects of Turkish culture, you'll be better prepared to navigate the country with ease and respect, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in its rich history, vibrant culture, and warm hospitality.
