Curator’s statement

Pomepi is a Roman city trapped in time thanks to the Vesuvius eruption in 79AD. A destination for history lovers, foodies, and adventure lovers. Good spot to stop and rest before going to the Amalfi Coast. This July 2023, I spent the whole month in Pompei as a member of an archeological excavation. I had the opportunity to experience Pompei as a local; here are some insider tips for one of the most memorable destinations in Italy.

Things to do in Pompeii, Italy

  • Tour Pompeii Archeological Park - Pompeii Archaeological Park is an experience unique to this world. To be able to walk around a city that was trapped in time thanks to a natural disaster feels like time traveling. It is guaranteed that all members of your crew will be amazed by it since there is only one place like Pompeii in the world. The park is very big, so be prepared to sweat, walk a lot and wear comfortable shoes. There are two cafes inside the park. Opens at 9am, entrance closes at 5:30pm and closes at 7pm. There is a museum inside the park: Antiquarium of Pompeii. Price: €19.00. Not recommended for people with disabilities.

  • Tour Mount Vesuvius - Departure from Pompeii at 8am. This tour takes you up the volcano at least 3/4 and the final climb is around 45 minutes.

  • Tour a vineyard - The Bosco de’ Medici Vineyard experience includes a wine tasting and a meal at the restaurant.

  • Spa at HABITA79 Pompeii - MGallery Collection - Try the NUXE Spa Experience.

  • Visit the Cathedral at the Main Plaza

  • Take the train from any of the three train stations in Pompeii to Naples, Ercolano or Sorrento.

Breakfast

If you want to grab a quick breakfast before going to the park, there are many small shops and stands open with breakfast on the way to the park’s main entrance.

Lunch & Dinner

Around the plaza, there are great restaurants; some of my favorites were:

  • Ristorante Pizzeria Bellavista: has a carbonara pasta to die for.

  • Ristorante Spinelli Bistrot: Cute Italian/French restaurant in the corner.

  • Capasanta: for a more boutique and fine dining experience.

Via Sacra is a street full of restaurants loved by locals with a variety of options to choose from. Some of them include:

  • Mercato Pompeiano Restaurant: Great plates of pasta, order the tomahawk to share, has a pizzeria across the street.

  • All’erba Pizzeria Newpolitana: If you are looking for a good Neapolitan pizza, this is the place to go.

  • Sofi Restaurant DjBar: A restaurant with great vibes, a live DJ and nice cocktails

  • Manko Sushi Restaurant Pompei: If you are craving some sushi while in Pompei, Manko has some authentic Japanese plates.

Gelato

My top 3 places for gelato are:

  • Gioelia: Right in the corner of the plaza, an award-winning Gelateria.

  • La Bottega: Cute little place on Via Sacra; my favorite was Pistachio Cheesecake.

  • De Vivo Pasticceria: On your way back from the archeological park, De Vivo is the best spot for a cold and sweet snack.

Aperitivo

  • The Roof: Amazing rooftop with views of the archeological park, the Vesuvius volcano, and the cathedral

  • Bar Santuario: Located in the heart of Pompei, Bar Santuario is a great spot for an Aperol before heading to dinner. I recommend ordering the international cold cuts entree.
