• The Copa timeless elegance has classic European architecture and lavish interiors, yet we are happy to see that Brazilian influences are woven throughout. • The half-size Olympic pool is the enticing centerpiece, with three restaurants clustered around it to create a laid-back hangout rivalling the beach. During the day, trays of burgers, salads and caipirinhas emerge near the sun loungers in cute small bamboo stalls.

• Stars such as Marlene Dietrich, Orson Welles, Brigitte Bardot, Pavarotti, The Rolling Stones, and Madonna have all graced the Copacabana Palace since Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers tap-danced their way around it in the 1933 classic Flying Down to Rio.

• However, prior to that, it was instrumental in transforming the beachfront into the globally recognized attraction that it is today. Originally scheduled to open in time for Brazil's 100th anniversary of independence in 1922, it was finished a year later, making up for the delay by transforming the decidedly unglamorous Copacabana neighborhood into a hotspot for the sophisticated set. It was designed by French architect Joseph Gire to resemble the storied Riviera hotels, especially the Carlton in Cannes.

• The Belmond Copacabana Palace was built between 1919 and 1923, in response to a request from then-President Epitácio Pessoa, who desired a grand tourist hotel in the capital city to accommodate the large number of visitors expected for the grand Centennial Exhibition of Brazil's Independence.

• In return, the Federal Government would grant tax incentives, as well as a license for the operation of a casino within the premises—a requirement by the entrepreneur. At the time, the hotel was the first large building in Copacabana, surrounded only by small houses and mansions.

• For the execution of the project, French architect Joseph Gire was hired, drawing inspiration from two famous hotels on the French Riviera: the Negresco in Nice and the Carlton in Cannes. The structure, both sober and imposing and extensively employed Carrara marble and Bohemian crystals.

• However, the hotel was only inaugurated on August 13, 1923, almost a year after the Centennial Exhibition. This delay was due to difficulties in importing marble and crystals and in executing its foundations.

• To mark the inauguration, the presence of the great French singer, actress, and vedette Mistinguett was counted on. Her presence and performance made the hotel's inauguration an event of worldwide projection.

• The hotel and its casino were essential for the consolidation of the Copacabana's fame and glamour in the following decades.

• On a somber note to its history, on May 23, 1928, Brazil's President Washington Luís was shot at the hotel by his lover, the Italian marchioness Elvira Vishi Maurich, who was 28 years old.

• After World War II, Brazil's president banned gambling in the country. The casino was transformed into a theater, and the hotel underwent extensive renovation, increasing its capacity and adding two floors to the main building.

• Princess Diana famously swam in the pool at the Copacabana Palace Hotel during her visit to Brazil in April 1991. This iconic moment captured the attention of the world media and contributed to further elevating the hotel's global renown. Her presence at the hotel, and particularly her swim in the pool, added to its allure and cemented its status as a destination favored by royalty and celebrities.

• Did you know? The hotel served as the theme for the musical "Flying Down to Rio," released in 1933, starring Dolores del Rio, in which Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers danced together for the first time. Although set at the hotel, the film was entirely shot in the United States, in studios with painted Rio de Janeiro scenes and on Malibu Beach, to create the exterior atmosphere. The film's success made the hotel known worldwide.
