Things to do in Rio de Janeiro

The Copacabana Palace, a Belmond Hotel in Rio de Janeiro, stands as Brazil's most glamorous stay for a multitude of reasons. It weaves together history, luxury and cultural significance into an unparalleled experience.
Since its opening in 1923, the Copacabana Palace has been a symbol of sophistication and elegance. It attracts an illustrious list of guests, including royalty, celebrities and dignitaries from around the world. Its storied past is intertwined with the history of Rio de Janeiro, having played a pivotal role in transforming the Copacabana neighborhood into a global hotspot for the elite. It holds the same significance for Rio as The Plaza Hotel does for New York or the Ritz does for Paris.
Situated along the iconic Copacabana Beach, the hotel boasts panoramic views of the dazzling shoreline and the sparkling waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Its prime location offers guests the opportunity to immerse themselves in the vibrant energy and culture of Rio, with easy access to the city's most renowned attractions and landmarks.
From its dazzling, classic white facade to its opulent interiors adorned with crystal chandeliers and fine artwork, the Copacabana Palace exudes an aura of timeless elegance and sophistication.
Beyond its status as a luxury hotel, the Copacabana Palace is a cultural icon in its own right. It embodies the spirit and vibrancy of Rio de Janeiro. Its halls have witnessed historic events, glamorous parties, earning it a place in the hearts of locals and visitors alike. The Copa embodies its significance with a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere, rather than being overly formal. From the vibrant colors of local artwork to the rhythmic beats of bossa nova music drifting through the halls and in the pool, guests are constantly reminded of the hotel's Brazilian heritage.
The half-size Olympic pool is the enticing centerpiece, with three restaurants clustered around it to create a laid-back hangout rivaling the beach. During the day, trays of burgers, salads and caipirinhas emerge near the sun loungers in cute small bamboo stalls.
Stars such as Marlene Dietrich, Orson Welles, Brigitte Bardot, Pavarotti, The Rolling Stones and Madonna have all graced the Copacabana Palace since Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers tap-danced their way around it in the 1933 classic Flying Down to Rio.
However, before that, it was instrumental in transforming the beachfront into the globally recognized attraction that it is today. Originally scheduled to open in time for Brazil's 100th anniversary of independence in 1922, it was finished a year later, making up for the delay by transforming the decidedly unglamorous Copacabana neighborhood into a hotspot for the sophisticated set. It was designed by French architect Joseph Gire to resemble the storied Riviera hotels, especially the Carlton in Cannes.
The Belmond Copacabana Palace was built between 1919 and 1923. This in response to a request from then-President Epitácio Pessoa. He desired a grand tourist hotel in the capital city to accommodate the large number of visitors expected for the grand Centennial Exhibition of Brazil's Independence.
In return, the federal government would grant tax incentives, as well as a license for the operation of a casino within the premises — a requirement by the entrepreneur. At the time, the hotel was the first large building in Copacabana, surrounded only by small houses and mansions.
For the execution of the project, French architect Joseph Gire was hired. He drew inspiration from two famous hotels on the French Riviera: the Negresco in Nice and the Carlton in Cannes. The structure, both sober and imposing and extensively employed Carrara marble and Bohemian crystals.
However, the hotel was only inaugurated on August 13, 1923, almost a year after the Centennial Exhibition. This delay was due to difficulties in importing marble and crystals and in executing its foundations.
To mark the inauguration, the presence of the great French singer, actress and vedette Mistinguett was counted on. Her presence and performance made the hotel's inauguration an event of worldwide renown.
The hotel and its casino were essential for the consolidation of Copacabana's fame and glamor in the following decades.
On a somber note to its history, on May 23, 1928, Brazil's President Washington Luís was shot at the hotel by his lover, the Italian Marchioness Elvira Vishi Maurich, who was 28 years old.
After World War II, Brazil's president banned gambling in the country. The casino was transformed into a theater. The hotel underwent extensive renovations, increasing its capacity and adding two floors to the main building.
Princess Diana famously swam in the pool at the Copacabana Palace Hotel during her visit to Brazil in April 1991. This iconic moment captured the attention of the world's media and contributed to further elevating the hotel's global renown. Her presence at the hotel, and particularly her swim in the pool, added to its allure.
The hotel served as the theme for the musical "Flying Down to Rio," released in 1933, starring Dolores del Rio, in which Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers danced together for the first time. Although set at the hotel, the film was entirely shot in the United States. It was filmed in studios with painted Rio de Janeiro scenes and on Malibu Beach, to create the exterior atmosphere. The film's success made the hotel known worldwide.
Rooms and suites
It's widely recognized that rooms overlooking the ocean are the most coveted. They offer unobstructed views of the original building without interference from the pool and nearby apartment complexes.
Decorated in subdued hues, the rooms feature furniture that may appear dated but harmonizes seamlessly with the subtly classic ambiance.
The interiors may be wonderfully retro, with a sitting area of proper living-room proportions, a sofa and a huge desk.
The suite floor at the Copacabana Palace Hotel is a realm of unparalleled luxury and sophistication. It is reserved for those seeking the pinnacle of indulgence. Perched atop the hotel, this exclusive level boasts a selection of opulent suites.
One of the most distinctive features of the suite floor is its stunning black pool, exclusive to the penthouse suites.
Service
The attentive and courteous staff, fluent in English, are highly trained in catering to the needs of the global clientele with efficiency and discretion.
Taxis and Uber make it simple to go to popular tourist destinations like the Sugarloaf Mountain cable car and Botanical Garden, as well as the chic eateries and bars in Ipanema. The concierge desk will organize tickets ahead of time and calculate waiting periods. This makes your visits to the Christ the Redeemer statue on Corcovado more doable.
Spa
Pull yourself from the pool and head to the spa in the new annex. Indulge in a 130-minute Páli ritual that includes an Amazonian white-clay mask or a balancing grapeseed-oil Harmonia massage.
Other amenities
A tennis court awaits on the rooftop of the third floor. Service extends to the sun loungers on the Copacabana Beach across, offering refreshing fresh fruits and coconut water.
The hotel buys its food and flowers from sustainable vendors. It also runs exclusively on renewable energy and organizes fundraisers to help several local charities.
