Fora’s Take

Block Island is an island located about nine miles off the coast of mainland Rhode Island. The beaches, light houses, bluffs and stunning ocean views are a magnet for visitors and locals alike. While not an inexpensive destination to visit, luxury is abundant and the Block has a vibe all of its own. Part of the fun of visiting the Block is the ferry ride from either Pt Judith, RI or the seasonal fast ferry from New London, CT. Block Island is a major tourist destination. The week including the 4th of July is packed with people and activities, including a parade. Lodging for this time in July is sold out well in advance, usually up to a year. Weekend stays are on the pricier side. A more affordable option would be the shoulder season (before Memorial Day and after Labor Day) when the weather is still agreeable and the summer crowds have thinned. Cars are allowed on Block Island and require a ferry ride from Pt Judith, RI. Passengers traveling without a car can travel from Pt Judith, RI or from New London, CT. The ferry from New London to Block Island is seasonal.

Things to do in Block Island, Rhode Island

Twilight in Rhode Island

Activities on Block Island are abundant. Block Island sports two light houses: the Southeast Light and the North Light. From the grounds of each, ocean views are spectacular. Other outside/active attractions are the beaches, walking trails, Mohegan Bluffs, farmers' markets, art shows and moped or bike rentals. A more recent addition is the Glass Float Project, a scavenger hunt to find hand-blown glass orbs that are hidden through out the island. When the weather is less agreeable, visit the many gift shops, art galleries and museums. And in the evening, The Empire Theater shows a movie!

Block Island has many places to enjoy a meal. For an excellent breakfast/brunch, head to the 1661 Inn. This first meal of the day is open to the public and is at a reduced rate for guests who stay at the 1661 Inn. Other choices of places to dine are Poor People's Pub, Dead Eye Dick's and Ballard's . All of these are casual places, with Ballard's being more party-like in atmosphere. For a more fine dining experience, the Block Island Oyster Bar and Grill is an elegant choice.
