Things to do in Tulum

Tulum’s cenotes are one of the region’s most breathtaking natural wonders. They offer crystal-clear waters, beautiful surroundings and a glimpse into the area’s rich history. Collapsed limestone forms the natural sinkholes. They create underground pools perfect for swimming, snorkeling and even diving. Beyond their beauty, cenotes hold deep cultural significance, once considered sacred by the Maya, who believed they were gateways to the underworld. If you want a peaceful swim or an adventurous dive into underwater caves, Tulum has a cenote for you! Here are some of the best cenotes I went to during my visit:
Gran Cenote: One of the most famous cenotes. It is perfect for snorkeling with turtles and small fish. I advise arriving early, though to avoid the crowds to fully experience the bliss.
Cenote Calavera: Also known as the “Temple of Doom.” This cenote has a deep blue pool with a jumping platform. It’s a great spot for thrill-seekers who love cliff jumping or cave diving.
Cenote Tortuga Tulum: This is a more family-friendly option with lots of guides around. There is on-site food and beverages, and four different cenotes located at the same place. This allows for more fun and lots to see for your younger adventure buddies.
While cenotes offer a refreshing escape, Tulum has even more to explore beyond its underground wonders. For a truly immersive experience, head to Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site filled with wildlife, mangroves and untouched beaches. It's perfect for a boat tour or snorkeling adventure. While you are there, you can spend some time at the amazing beach inside the biosphere with no crowds.
Speaking of beaches, if you’re a Ken and all you know is beach, Tulum has you covered. A classic Tulum beach day is found at Playa Paraíso. It is one of the most stunning beaches in Tulum, with soft white sand and bright blue waters. You can also rent a beach bed at a nearby club, Bagatelle Beach Club, or bring your own towel for a budget-friendly day.
Of course, no visit to Tulum is complete without exploring its famous ruins, the only Mayan ruins overlooking the Caribbean Sea. You can get a ticket on site or pay for a guided tour. You should try to visit early in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the heat and crowds. If you go in the evening, get excited for a stunning sunset! A great time for a golden hour photo shoot!
For a deeper dive into Mayan history, venture to Coba, located outside the city so it is way less touristy. You can climb the Nohoch Mul pyramid, and since it is in the jungle, it is a little bit cooler and provides breathtaking views. Get there by private car rental or taxi and then rent a bike on site to explore the massive site easily.
Day trips
For those looking to explore beyond Tulum, a day trip offers the perfect opportunity to experience more of Yucatán’s rich history a little more off the beaten path.
My favorite day trip from Tulum is to hire a guide to take you to Chichen Itzá with the Cenote Maya afterwards. Chichen Itzá is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the Seven Wonders of the World. It is a must-see for its intact pyramids and rich Mayan history. After exploring the ruins, your guide will take you to cool off at Cenote Maya. This is a fully swimmable cenote that has crystal-clear water. There is also a platform you can swim to and jump off! While you are there, chat it up with your guide and local workers to learn about the cultural significance of the cenote.
Places to eat & drink in Tulum

Tulum’s breakfast and lunch scene is just as vibrant as its beaches, with everything from laid-back cafés serving fresh smoothie bowls and local taco spots on the beach. Here are some of my recommendations:
Raw Love: A health-focused café with delicious smoothie bowls, fresh juices and plant-based dishes. Located near the beach, it’s a perfect spot for a light breakfast or lunch.
Taqueria La Eufemia: A relaxed beachfront taco spot with great food and an even better vibe. It’s perfect for enjoying fish tacos while taking a break from the heat at lunch time and has a fun, casual atmosphere.
Tulum’s dinner scene has a mix of upscale jungle dining, beachfront seafood feasts and cozy local spots serving authentic Mexican flavors. There is fire-grilled meats, handmade pasta and fresh-caught seafood. Sounds amazing, right??
Hartwood: A popular, open-air restaurant offering wood-fired dishes made from locally sourced ingredients. The atmosphere is laid-back yet upscale, and it’s a great spot for dinner. We will need to make a reservation ahead of time to secure a spot, but I've got you covered!
Arca Tulum: A high-end jungle restaurant with an innovative menu featuring local ingredients and flavors. Expect beautiful dishes and a candlelit ambiance.
La Zebra: A beachfront restaurant offering upscale Mexican cuisine in a relaxed setting. With fresh seafood, great margaritas and ocean views, there is not much more you can ask for while eating dinner with your feet in the sand.
For my friends that always like to keep the night going, here are some of my top recommendations for after-dinner spots and nightlife:
The Beach Club at Papaya Playa Project is a beach club that turns into a nightclub after dark. Enjoy electronic beats, bonfires and a laid-back yet energetic vibe. Perfect for those looking to dance by the ocean under the stars.
Ziggy's Beach Club is a beachfront venue with a more low-key nightlife scene, perfect for an evening by the ocean with some drinks and live music. Ideal if you want to keep things relaxed and casual.
