Things to do in Western Switzerland

Oeschinen Lake is a stunning alpine lake in Switzerland, renowned for its crystal-clear waters and picturesque mountain surroundings.

Cities

Bern: The capital city of Switzerland, Bern, combines history, culture and natural beauty. Even if you’re only able to spend a few hours in this city, it’s worth the stop! Walk through the Old City and see the Zytglogge, one of Bern’s most iconic landmarks. This astronomical clock displays the time, date, phases of the moon and a revolving golden sun with an extended chime at 15 minutes past the hour, followed by a parade of figurines. Continue to stroll along the turquoise Aare River that flows through the city.

Geneva: This stunning town sits on the western edge of Lake Geneva and is a cosmopolitan and dynamic city with a unique blend of history, diplomacy, natural beauty, and cultural richness. While here, shop for classic Swiss watches in the city’s Old Town, visit one of the many beautifully manicured parks or visit one of the many unique museums, like the Patek Philippe Museum.

Interlaken: nestled between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, Interlaken is a picturesque town located in the Bernese Oberland region of Switzerland. This is a great base if you’re looking to explore the exquisite Swiss Alps.

Village Towns

Lauterbrunnen: a quaint village in the Bernese Oberland region of Switzerland, is known for its stunning valley, cascading waterfalls, and access to the surrounding mountains. Explore the lush green meadows, charming farms, and numerous waterfalls while you hike or bike through the valley. While here, stop by the lovely alpine village of Gimmelwald.

Adelboden: a lovely village in the Bernese Oberland region of Switzerland, popular for outdoor enthusiasts throughout the year. There is wonderful alpine scenery to see at every corner.

Gruyères: a charming and historic town that offers a mix of culture, history, and culinary experiences. Visit the iconic Gruyères Castle, a medieval fortress that is a prominent symbol of the town and then stop for lunch at one of the many restaurants that serve incredible cheese fondue.

Magical Lakes

Oeschinensee: Known for being one of the world’s bluest lakes, this is not to be missed! My personal trip to Western Switzerland was built around finally getting to see this natural beauty! To visit, head to the village of Kandersteg, where you can take a cable car to the upper station, which will offer breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains. Follow the trail to the stunning Oeschinen Lake, where you can enjoy a lakeside picnic or continue exploring along one of the many hiking trails to one-of-a-kind viewpoints and natural wonders. If you have extra time, you can rent a canoe to explore the lake.

Blausee Lake: On your way to Oeschinensee, stop by another natural wonder, Blausee Lake! Located in the Bernese Oberland region near Kandergrund, sits an exquisite turquoise lake.
