Curator’s statement

I spent five months studying dance in Florence, Italy in the spring of 2021. Due to the pandemic, I was not able to travel out of the city often, and found myself immersed in Florence's culture and it quickly felt like home. On a student's budget, I discovered where the locals eat the most delicious meals and treats and learned the best food isn't always the most expensive! Since then, I have been back to try out new restaurants and love sending clients. From pizza to pasta to gelato, these are my favorite spots in Florence!

Pizza

Gustarium - Gustarium is a favorite dining spot that offers an exceptional pizza experience. Owned by two brothers, they take pride in their delicious whole wheat schiacciata, which is fermented for 48 hours. Using fresh local ingredients, they create the best pizza al taglio. You can watch the pizza-making process and see the dough being prepared right in front of you. Unlike most pizzerias, they don't have a fixed menu but instead offer a variety of square-cut pizzas with different toppings such as veggies, meats and cheeses. You can even request a custom creation for a delightful surprise. As a self-proclaimed cheese pizza eater, I was pleasantly surprised by their enticing combinations featuring peppers, onions, mortadella, zucchini, potatoes and more. Don't forget to ask for a dessert pizza — a small square of dough topped with ricotta, mascarpone and various fruits, cocoa, honey and other delightful ingredients. Prices for slices start around 4-5 euros.

Gustapizza - You will find Gusta Pizza across the River Arno. They have delicious pizzas with high-quality flavors and a kind staff. You can watch your pizza be made in the giant brick oven. Dine inside or head to the nearby Pitti Palace steps to eat and then head inside to tour fascinating Pitti Palace and beautiful Boboli Gardens!

Panini

Sandwhichic: If you're in Florence and craving a delicious panino, Sandwhichic is the place to go. Considered the best panino spot in town, the owners are known for their kindness and helpful recommendations. The workers dress in suspenders and bowties, adding a charming touch to the experience. Panini prices are around 5 euros, and you can make it a combo by adding a drink. Don't miss the opportunity to try their homemade jams, which you can even take home with you. The classic Salame Artigianale with Pecorino and red pepper jam was a personal favorite, while my friends loved the combination of Gorgonzola and onion jam with prosciutto, straciatella and balsamic. I was so impressed with the pear and cinnamon jam that I bought a jar to enjoy later. Grab a panino to-go and head to the nearby Piazza San Lorenzo, where you can sit on the steps and enjoy your delicious meal.

Restaurants

Il Santo Bevitore is a delicious restaurant located in the Oltrarno across the river. It is a quiet and unknown locals spot with delicious meals and a great wine list. I love sending clients here for dinner on their first night or a special occasion. It is traditionally Tuscan with a contemporary flair.

Borgo San Jacopo is an incredible Michelin-star restaurant in the charming and luxurious Hotel Lungarno. If you stay at the hotel and book with a Fora Advisor , you can use your $100 credit perk. Indulge in a multi-course meal of elevated and traditional Italian dishes matched with impeccable service. Perfect for a special occasion and the views over the Arno river are magical.

Gelato

Gelateria La Carraia:This gelato shop is a favorite among locals and visitors alike. Located across the River Arno, it offers stunning views of the Ponte Vecchio. Indulge in a coppa or cono (cup or cone) and savor flavors like fragola (strawberry) and mousse al cioccolato (chocolate mousse), while nocciola (hazelnut) is also highly recommended. Prices range from around 1.50 to 3 euros per order. Pro Tip: Don't miss out on trying at least two flavors!

Gelateria de NeriA close second on the list, Gelateria de Neri is known for its delicious gelato. Don't be hesitant to try the unique flavor combination of ricotta e fig (ricotta and fig) – it might sound unusual, but it's a delightful blend of flavors reminiscent of ricotta and honey. Conveniently located just a 5-minute walk from the Uffizi Gallery, it's a perfect spot to treat yourself after a cultural excursion. Pro Tip: Watch out for gelato shops where the gelato is displayed in tall mounds or covered in a tin container. These may contain additives and are not as authentic or flavorful.
