Curator’s statement
As a Midwesterner, I’ve always been more familiar with the Great Lakes than the Jersey Shore, until very recently. My favorite little Oceanside town, Cape May, New Jersey, reminds me of a small Northern Michigan beach village with the enormous Hydrangea, candy-colored Victorian homes and hotels and wholesome beach fun. This guide routes you through Philadelphia and either a 2-hour car or bus ride to get you to the beach. If you’re looking for a nostalgic, family-friendly coastal getaway, this is your place. While you’re there, grab some extra salt water taffy for me!

Things to do in New Jersey
Of course, you must head to the beach. Depending on where you stay, you’re going to be right across from the beach or a few blocks away. You must have a Beach Tag on you to visit the beach between the hours of 10am and 5pm between Memorial Day and Labor Day (for people over 12 years old). They cost between $8 for a daily pass to $30 for a seasonal pass.
Appreciate carefree joy with your family, rent a surrey bike, play a round of mini-golf or splash in the hotel pool.
Cool down with a Water Ice or Custard at Rita’s while you walk along the beach or take a break in the shade.
Shop for treats, postcards, and souvenirs at Washington Commons. My favorite gifts to bring back to family and friends are things to eat or practical items. Try the Cape May Creamery for cheeses, they also carry Cape May Olive Oil Co. products.
I can’t help but take a peek into the local bookshop. On the mall, you can find Cape Atlantic Book Company.
You can’t miss watching the sunset over Delaware Bay at Sunset Beach.
Explore the Cape May Winery & Vineyard and attend an educational wine tasting for $25.
Places to eat & drink in New Jersey
Philadelphia near Rittenhouse Square
Open pretty much all-day, stop by a.kitchen + bar - the crispy oyster mushrooms and gougers are not to be missed. They have a fantastic wine list including numerous natural options.
For brunch, sit outside at the Parc and enjoy classic French favorites like Quiche Lorraine or Niçoise Salad and the delights from the raw bar with a glass of champagne or a spritz.
Cape May
A little bit of New Orleans on the Jersey Shore. Grab oysters, fries, and a classic cocktail at the bar at The Ebbitt Room at the Virginia Hotel.
H&H Seafood for steamed blue claw crabs and classic seafood take-away options. You can grab some little wooden mallets to whack at the shells and dig right in with your hands. So satisfying.
Stop by the Classic 1970’s Era Surfer bar & restaurant, The Rusty Nail. You can’t miss it, with its bright orange and blue umbrellas located next to the Beach Shack hotel. I couldn’t resist a Frozen Sandy Beach cocktail, their signature drink. Along with classic pub fare, they serve an array of broiled and fried fresh seafood.
Ocean 7, located in the Inn of Cape May, which was once a boarding house back in the 1890s, is conveniently open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and they have a coffee shop and bar, The Porch.
Snag a lobster roll from Quincy’s Original to eat on the beach for lunch, my faves are the Classic/Maine Style and Lobster Salad. Nothing beats a beach picnic with fresh seafood.
