Curator’s statement

As hot temperatures soar worldwide, Alaska beckons cool-climate-seeking travelers with stunning scenery, captivating wildlife and heaps of adventure. Cruising, especially on a small liner, is the simplest and most comprehensive way to explore Alaska, particularly the inside passage. Make the most of your upcoming Alaskan cruise by combining it with pre- or post-trip exploration of Seattle and Vancouver.

Things to do in Seattle & Vancouver

A scenic landscape with a body of water, mountains in the distance, clear skies and greenery in the foreground.

Seattle

  • Pike Place Market: A Seattle staple, no trip is complete with a visit to Pike Place market. Arrive hungry around lunch time and sample your way through the various stalls and stations.

  • Starbucks Reserve Roastery: Whether you’re a fan of Starbucks or not, the Reserve roastery is truly impressive and worth a visit.

  • Kerry Park: One of the best viewpoints of the Seattle skyline and Mount Rainier. Arrive early ahead of sunrise or sunset to stake out a spot amidst the photographers.

  • Boeing Museum: If you are planning to rent a car to drive between Seattle and Vancouver, a stop at the Boeing Museum is a must. It is truly impressive to explore, aviation fan or not. Tickets are recommended in advance.

Vancouver

  • Stanley Park: Stanley Park and the surrounding area is a beautiful spot to take in Vancouver Harbour and the Burrard Inlet. Grab a picnic lunch at Urban Fare and head over to the park to watch the floatplanes land.

  • Granville Island: Granville Island is easily accessible from the heart of Vancouver and features farmer’s markets, fresh eateries and artisan shops, to name a few.

Anchorage

Most cruise liners offer transfer to Anchorage where you will take your departing flight home from. I highly suggest adding a few days exploring Anchorage if you have the time. Some highlights:

  • Denali National Park: Although it requires a transferor overnight stay, Denali National Park is a gem worth exploring. Private cars are able to enter a small portion of the park, while the balance is open to hiking and tour buses.

  • Seaplane Adventures: There are several seaplane operators flying out of Lake Hood, Anchorage. I used Rust’s Flying Service and had a great experience. You can charter a whole plane for larger groups or seats for smaller groups. Sea planes are a unique way to explore the abundant glaciers and lakes surrounding Anchorage.

Seattle

  • Beecher’s Handmade Cheese: Worth a stop in, whether you’re planning to buy or sample some cheese or not.

  • Top Pot Doughnuts: Great donuts and coffee, particularly the blueberry cake and other seasonal flavors.

  • The Pink Door: Excellent Italian food without too much pomp and circumstance.

  • Rock Creek: For what locals consider to be some of the best seafood in Seattle.

Vancouver

  • Sai Woo: Mind-blowing dim sum.

  • Liberty Distillery: Fun spot to grab a drink after dining at Granville Public Market.

Anchorage

  • Snow City Cafe: Incredible breakfast and worth the long wait.

  • Wild Scoops Ice Cream: Make sure to try the spruce tip ice cream, an Alaskan specialty.
