Thrill-seeking:

  • Jet boating: This jet boat ride on the Shotover River is an exhilarating adventure through narrow canyons, guided by captains who navigate daring twists and turns. Prior to the thrilling jet boat ride, you will enjoy a scenic route on the tour bus that showcases the break taking views of the Remarkable.

  • Bungee jumping/Zip-lining: If you are an adrenaline junkie, you can’t go to Queenstown and not bungee jump or zipline. Both options give you a chance to dive directly into New Zealand’s natural beauty, maybe even seeing a few wildlife animals while hanging upside down!

  • If you are looking for a slower pace, Queenstown also offers exquisite paragliding adventures as well.

  • Mountain biking: In the summers, Queenstown features excellent biking trails, such as the Skyline Queenstown Bike Park and the Queenstown Trail. Their diverse terrain and scenic routes through the alpines make these trails stand out among the rest. If you want a chance to explore the region from a unique perspective, these biking trails are a must for outdoor enthusiasts.

Relaxing experiences:

  • Remarkables: Home to some of the most photographed peaks in New Zealand, Queenstown is your chance to witness the Remarkables. These mountains get their name from the remarkable backdrop showcased by the summit. Just a short walk around Lake Wakatipu and you have yourself one of the most remarkable views on the island.

  • Onsen Hot Pools: This is the ultimate relaxation spot tucked away less than 10 minutes away from the city. These spa pools are filled by the pure water captured by the sky, lined with cedar, and overlook the Shotover River Canyon. An uninterrupted experience that allows you to take in the natural setting and serene surroundings while sipping on complimentary drinks.

  • Helicopter adventures: No matter the season, Queenstown helicopter tours offer nothing but sparkling beauty. Whether you want to experience a short 20-min scenic flight over Lake Wakatipu, or a half day flight to the Milford Sounds, the opportunities are endless.

  • Vineyard hopping: If you’re a wine lover, you must experience vineyard hopping in Otago. An hour outside of Queenstown you’ll reach the home of Chardonnay and Aromatics, Otago. Local guides can take you from Queenstown to Otago to relaxingly enjoy the wine tour. There are numerous wineries in the heart of Queenstown as well.   • Hiking trails: Some of the best hikes to hit while you’re in Queenstown include the Ben Lomond Track and the Routeburn Track. Known for their extraordinary vistas of snow-capped peaks in the winter, crystal-clear lakes and lush forests, these trails offer hiking-lovers an immersive experience. These trails are definitely worth the trek for the unparalleled natural serenity.

Day Trips:

  • Milford/Doubtful Sounds: These iconic sounds unveil awe-inspiring landscapes of towering cliffs, cascading waterfalls and tranquil waters reflecting the wilderness. To reach the Milford Sound and Doubtful Sound from Queenstown, travelers typically drive on a scenic road trip through Fiordland National Park either by rental car or tour bus. Throughout the drive, the peaks and rainforests are too majestic to put into words. Don’t forget your rain jacket when visiting the sounds! Most cruise boats have interior spaces, but travelers tend to peak outside to get a better view, resulting in getting a bit wet! This epic experience is totally worth the drive if you find yourself on New Zealand’s South Island.

  • Mount Cook: New Zealand’s tallest peak, Mount Cook, is just a 3-hr road trip from Queenstown. The drive to the mountain is a spectacular journey through the heart of the Southern alps. Snow-capped peaks, turquoise lakes and large glaciers are a few breathtaking views along the way. Mount Cook is renowned for being the largest mountain in New Zealand, offering special opportunities for hiking and stargazing. Fun Fact: Sir Edmund Hillary used Mount Cook as an aid in preparing himself for his climb up Everest.

  • Red Rock Bar Cafe: One of Queenstown’s oldest establishments covered in locals and encapsulates cozy. Situated conveniently next to the bus stop, it’s a perfect breakfast spot to start your day. In the afternoons, you’ll find live music everyday along with an extensive beer garden.

  • Local market: The Remarkables Market on Saturdays in Queenstown is a perfect opportunity to support the local community in purchasing handmade pastries or handcrafted art. There are many on-the-go fresh food options to snack on wild admiring the views of the Remarkables.

  • The Cow: Operating since 1977, The Cow is known for its delicious pizza and spaghetti. Another fan favorite you must try if you stop at The Cow is the garlic bread! Back in the day, The Cow had a reputation for daring parties and ski celebrations for their conquering ski team. The menu has remained the same since opening day, making this a true Queenstown institution for locals and visitors for 40 years.

  • The Bunker Restaurant: This rustic-fireside dining atmosphere includes an extensive wine and cocktail list, paired with premium local cuts and delicacies. The Bunker is a perfect dim-lit dinner for two or a night out with friends that immerses customers in their distinctive New Zealand flavor. Located in the heart of the city, it is a convenient stop before or after watching the sunset on Lake Wakatipu.
