A serene moment of a whale breaching in the ocean, captured against a vast backdrop and a clear sky.
Curator’s statement

From early December to mid April you can enjoy the dramatic sight of immense whales breaching and blowing off the coast of Los Cabos during Cabo Whale Season. Travelers arrive from all over the world for the guaranteed sight of these majestic creatures during their migration through the waters around the Baja Peninsula. Along with the humpback whales, you can spot blue whales, gray whales and even orcas. The star of the season is the humpback whale, measuring up to 50-feet long. The whales travel over 3000 miles during their gestational period of 10-12 months. Giving birth in the salty, protected waters of the Sea of Cortes gives the calves a buoyant, safe place to start their long lives.

Things to do in Los Cabos

A contemplative observer gazes at a whale’s tail above the ocean, with distant mountains under a partly cloudy sky.

Best resorts for whale watching:

Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal A 5-star resort worthy of the Waldorf Astoria reputation; what sets the property apart is the thoughtfully attentive service and the true pride that the staff displays. The location on Pedregal Beach is private and dramatic, with the crashing waves setting a beautiful backdrop to the infinity pools and classic architecture. Pedregal is the ideal location for whale spotting, with expansive southern views of the Pacific Ocean.

Montage Los Cabos Perched above the most swimmable beach in Los Cabos, the Montage enjoys views of Santa Maria Bay and the Sea of Cortes. This 39-acre resort complex is steeped in chic luxury and stunning views. Montage features a world-class spa and access to golf and water sports. The lush tropical property welcomes you to it’s beachfront pool complex and modern rooms and villas.

Montage features the largest spa on the Baja Peninsula. It is 40,000 square feet and includes a serenity pool and 12 peaceful treatment rooms. Santa Maria Bay is a prime spot for whale watching and you can often see mothers and calves in the safe, shallow water close to the shore.

Esperanza an Auberge Resort High above Cabo’s Punta Ballena coastline, the Esperanza Resort features Cabo’s only private beach. Two coves are accessible from the resort and are the perfect complement to the all-suite, adults only side of Esperanza and the villas on the family side of the resort.

The property sits on Punta Ballena (Whale Point) and, unsurprisingly, has expansive views of the Sea of Cortes from the infinity pools and all points of the resort. Every suite and villa has a private terrace with an ocean view and the main restaurant, La Terraza Americana sits dramatically on the tip of the cliffs. Between watching for those breaching whales, enjoy a spa treatment or complimentary yoga class. Activities include an art gallery, tequila (or Mezcal) tastings, fitness classes and a kids club.
