Curator’s statement

The Azores holds a special place in my heart because of its warm, welcoming people and rich culture that make me feel at home every time I visit. The safety and tranquility of the islands allow me to fully immerse myself in the breathtaking landscapes, from the lush greenery to the vibrant hydrangeas that color the scenery. Every trip is filled with endless adventures, whether hiking through volcanic craters or exploring hidden coastal gems, savoring the local wine or indulging in the famous Azorean octopi dishes for which the region is famous. The beauty of the Azores, both in its nature and in the spirit of its people, continues to captivate and inspire me. The island is only 12 miles wide and 42 miles long, making it extremely easy to change up itinerary options depending on the weather.

Day 1: Arrival in São Miguel, Azores

A serene lakeside view with vibrant blue hydrangea flowers in the foreground and a forested hill under a cloudy sky.

Arrival & car rental:

Upon arriving in São Miguel, the first thing you'll want to do is grab your rental car from the airport. It's important to choose wisely when it comes to transmission: if you're not comfortable driving a manual, stick to an automatic, as most of the roads through the villages are narrow with steep inclines from the coast. To avoid the stress of stalling on a hill, we suggest opting for an automatic. However, if your skills with a manual are above average, feel free to pick that option. Many travelers find it enjoyable and engaging to drive a stick shift on the island’s winding roads.

Termas da Ferraria:

Once you're behind the wheel, your first destination should be Termas da Ferraria. After a long flight, this ocean-fed thermal spring is one of the best ways to ease muscle aches and feel refreshed. The combination of warm volcanic waters mixing with the cool Atlantic creates one of the most unique swimming experiences in the world. We recommend bringing water shoes for the walk to the ladders, as the terrain is volcanic rock. After your swim, walk up the stairs to rinse off and bask in the relaxing effects of the mineral-rich waters.

Sete Cidades:

If the skies are clear, your next stop should be Sete Cidades. Here, you’ll be treated to breathtaking views of the twin volcanic crater lakes — one blue and one green —surrounded by massive hydrangeas in bloom. If you’re up for a hike, there are many trails to choose from, catering to both families with young children and those seeking a bit more adventure. The views from these trails are nothing short of spectacular, offering different perspectives of the crater and the surrounding landscape.

Sunset at Mosteiros Beach:

As the day winds down, make your way to Mosteiros Beach on the western side of the island for an unforgettable sunset. The black volcanic sand, rocky formations, and crashing waves create a dramatic backdrop as the sun dips below the horizon. This is also where we recommend you stay for your first evening, allowing you to unwind after a full day of exploration and prepare for the adventures that await on the rest of your journey.

Dinner option is O America De Barbosa. We recommend you make reservations in the day so that you are able to be seated at 7 pm when they reopen for dinner.

Your evening accommodation is Sensi Azores Nature & Spa or Santa Barbara Eco Beach Resort.

Day 2: Explore Vila Franca do Campo & beyond

A person’s legs rest on a kayak, with a view of the water, kayaks, and a rocky shore under a partly cloudy sky.

Morning: Have breakfast & start your day

Start your day with a breakfast at your hotel, or if you prefer something more local, stop by a nearby bakery for some fresh pastries and coffee.

Vila Franca do Campo: Beach or adventure

Today, you'll be driving to Vila Franca do Campo, a charming town with plenty to offer. If you're in the mood for a relaxing beach day, head to Praia da Vinha da Areia. This sandy beach is ideal for soaking up the sun and enjoying the clear waters. Families with young children will appreciate the small water theme park located just behind the beach, which offers a fun diversion for the little ones.

For those seeking a bit more adventure, consider reserving a kayak at the marina to experience something truly unique — swimming and snorkeling inside an ancient volcanic crater. We highly recommend booking with OceanEye Azores, a family-run business that prioritizes hospitality and safety. They provide dry bags for your essentials, ensuring a worry-free adventure. If kayaking isn't your style, you can opt for a boat tour, but be sure to arrive by 9 am to secure your ticket, as spots fill up quickly.

Ermida de Nossa Senhora da Paz: A scenic detour

After your aquatic adventure, look up and you'll see the stunning Ermida De Nossa Senhora da Paz, a white chapel perched on the hillside. Take the time to drive up and visit this site for some breathtaking views of the town below and the expansive ocean. The serenity of this place, combined with its panoramic vistas, makes it a must-see on your journey.

Termas das Caldeiras: A Jurassic retreat

Next, head to Termas das Caldeiras, a thermal spring that feels like stepping into a Jurassic world. Surrounded by lush greenery and steam rising from the mineral-rich waters, it’s the perfect spot to relax and unwind after a day of exploration.

Dinner at Caloura Bar: A culinary treat

End your day with a dinner at Bar Caloura, known for its fresh seafood and local dishes. The relaxed atmosphere and scenic views make it a great place to enjoy a meal as the day winds down. If you are still in the mood for some swimming they have a natural oceanic pool behind the restaurant. We suggest staying in this region for the evening, allowing you to fully soak in the tranquility and beauty of this part of the island before resting up for the next day's adventures.

Day 3: Hike, swim & visit Furnas Lake

A waterfall cascades down a rocky cliff surrounded by lush greenery, with a clear pool at the bottom reflecting the surrounding nature.

Morning: Coastal drive to Povoação

Start your day early by driving the scenic coastal route towards the eastern side of the island. As you make your way along the coast, you'll pass through charming villages and enjoy stunning ocean views. Your first destination is the town of Povoação. Just a few minutes outside of town, you'll find the trailhead for Cascata do Salto do Prego.

Hiking to Cascata do Salto do Prego

This hike is accessible for all ages and takes approximately 45 minutes to an hour to reach the waterfall. The trail winds through lush forest, offering glimpses of local flora and some very curious roosters and chickens. Once you arrive, you’ll be rewarded with one of the best waterfall swimming holes on the island. The cool, refreshing waters are perfect for a swim, and you can easily spend the entire day here if you choose. Whether you make it a full-day excursion or just a quick side trip, the beauty and tranquility of this spot will leave a lasting impression.

Afternoon: Praia da Povoação

If you prefer warmer waters, head to Praia da Povoação after your hike. Thanks to nearby thermal activity, the ocean here is slightly warmer than other beaches on the island, making it a comfortable spot for a swim. Relax on the beach and enjoy the unique warmth of the waters as you unwind from your hike.

Evening: Explore Furnas & relax at Furnas Lake

After a day of hiking and swimming, make your way to the village of Furnas. Take a leisurely stroll along the shores of Furnas Lake, where the peaceful surroundings will help you unwind. For dinner we recommend Tonys in town. Try to get a spot on the second-floor balcony. Perhaps you may catch a festival happening. For accommodations, we recommend staying at Furnas Lake Living, which is just steps away from the lake.

Night: Discover Terra Nostra Gardens

Before settling in for the night, be sure to take a walk through the village to admire the beauty of the Terra Nostra Gardens. The lush gardens are home to a stunning thermal pool, where you can enjoy a relaxing soak before bed. Other options close by are Boca Da Dona Beija thermal springs. They are open until 11 pm on certain days. The warm, mineral-rich waters are the perfect way to end a day filled with adventure and exploration.

Day 4: Discover Nordeste & beyond

A cluster of blue hydrangea flowers stands out against a dark background.

Morning: Drive to Nordeste

Continuing your journey along the scenic coastal route, your next destination is the picturesque village of Nordeste. Along the way, you’ll encounter numerous viewpoints, all marked as "Miradouro." These spots offer breathtaking views of the coastline and lush green hills, so be sure to stop and take in the scenery.

Explore Nordeste

Upon arriving in Nordeste, take some time to explore this charming village. It’s known for its beautiful gardens, quaint streets, and welcoming atmosphere. Stop at a local café or bakery to grab some snacks and lunch before continuing your adventure.

Afternoon: Natural ocean pool swim

As you head out of Nordeste, you’ll have the chance to swim in a natural ocean-fed pool. The road down to the pool is steep and narrow, so pay close attention to the traffic light on the right to ensure safe passage. Once there, you can enjoy a refreshing swim in the clear, cool waters while taking in the rugged beauty of the coastline. If you have opted for the manual car option and are not entirely comfortable with the hill then we suggest parking at the top and walking down.

Picnic at Ribeira dos Caldeirões Park

After your swim, make your way to Ribeira dos Caldeirões Park for a picnic. The park is renowned for its stunning landscapes, including waterfalls, lush greenery, and old watermills. It’s an ideal spot to relax, enjoy your meal, and capture some beautiful photos. Don't forget your camera, as the natural beauty here is truly spectacular.

Adventure in Achadinha: Canyoning with Azores Epic Adventure

If you're looking for a thrilling land-and-water adventure, we recommend canyoning with Azores Epic Adventure in Achadinha. This experience combines hiking, climbing, and swimming as you navigate through the island’s rugged terrain and cascading waterfalls. It’s a perfect way to explore the island’s natural beauty from a unique perspective, offering an unforgettable mix of excitement and awe-inspiring views.

Afternoon Teatime: Adding a stop at Chá Gorreana

As you continue your exploration of São Miguel, a visit to Chá Gorreana is a must. This tea plantation is not only the oldest in Europe but also one of the most picturesque spots on the island. Don't forget to take a walk through their trails.

Evening: End the day in Ribeira Grande

After a day filled with adventure, head to Ribeira Grande to wind down for the evening. This vibrant town offers a charming atmosphere and is a great place to relax after a full day of exploring.

Dinner at Restaurante Associação Agrícola de São Miguel

For dinner, we suggest dining at Restaurante Associação Agrícola de São Miguel, known for its incredible steak. After a fun-filled day of exercise, a hearty meal packed with protein is just what you need to refuel and prepare for the next day’s adventures. The restaurant’s welcoming atmosphere and delicious dishes make it a perfect spot to end your day on a high note.

Accommodation

For a unique and historical stay, we recommend booking a night at Pico do Refúgio.

Day 5: Exploring Ponta Delgada

A glass of wine is silhouetted against a serene sunset, creating a picturesque scene.

Morning: Drive to Ponta Delgada

On your final day, drive south to Ponta Delgada, the vibrant capital of São Miguel. This bustling city will be your base as you spend your last day soaking in the sights and experiences the Azores have to offer

Whale Watching with Futurismo

We suggest spending part of your day on a whale-watching adventure with Futurismo, a family-owned company that has been in operation since 1990. Your journey will be guided by experienced biologists and local experts who are passionate about marine life and the preservation of the ocean. With their in-depth knowledge, they’ll help you spot whales, dolphins and other marine creatures, offering insights into the behavior and ecology of these magnificent animals.

Afternoon:

Once you have completed your whale watching experience head into the city and view the Portas da Cidade — city gates. Once again it’s camera time. Explore the city streets at your leisure.

For a quick snack before an activity or dinner make sure to explore Mercado da Graca. It’s a great spot to find locally grown fruits and veggies. Be sure to pop into O Rei dos Queijos if cheese is your thing. If a full sit down lunch is more your style head over to Terra Verde Tea House.

Evening:

Dinner Accommodation is A Tasca. It’s a space created for families, friends and celebrations of life and food.

Hotel Accommodations for your last evening we suggest something with historic charm to round out your travel in the Azores. Head over to Hotel Talisman if you are looking for something a bit more boutique-style rather than a big modern hotel
