Curator’s statement

If you want to immerse yourself in Japan's rich history and beauty, the city of Kyoto is for you. Kyoto holds a special place in my heart for its seamless blend of ancient tradition and natural beauty. Walking through the Fushimi Inari Shrine at sunrise offers a serene start to the day, with the thousands of red torii gates creating a mystical atmosphere. Exploring historical sites like Nijo-jo Castle and Kiyomizu-dera Temple provides a deep connection to Japan’s rich cultural heritage. At the same time, the vibrant Gion district immerses you in the timeless elegance of geisha culture. Ending the day with sunset drinks at Hotel Seiry Kyoto Kiyomizu, overlooking the city, perfectly encapsulates the serene and enchanting essence of Kyoto.

Sightseeing

Fushimi Inari Shrine — The iconic red torii gates are stunning, and it's less crowded at sunrise, offering a peaceful experience. Wear comfortable shoes for the hike up the mountain, and bring water as vending machines are sparse along the path.

Nijo-jo Castle — This UNESCO World Heritage site provides a glimpse into the life of the samurai and the shogunate with its beautiful gardens and intricate interiors.

Gion District — Known for its traditional wooden machiya houses, teahouses and geisha culture, Gion is perfect for an evening stroll. Visit around dusk to see geishas hurrying to their appointments and enjoy the atmospheric lantern-lit streets.

Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion): This Zen Buddhist temple's golden reflection in the surrounding pond is breathtaking and makes for perfect photo opportunities.

Nishiki Market — This lively market, known as "Kyoto’s Kitchen," is the best place to sample local delicacies and buy unique souvenirs. Try street food, such as yakitori (grilled chicken skewers) and matcha treats, and visit the market early to avoid the rush.

Heian Shrine — Known for its massive torii gate and beautiful gardens, it’s a serene place to explore.

Yasaka Pagoda (Hokan-ji Temple) - This iconic five-story pagoda is one of Kyoto’s most recognizable landmarks and offers a glimpse into the city’s historical architecture. The area around the pagoda is perfect for a leisurely stroll, especially in the early morning or late afternoon when the light is soft.

Arashiyama Bamboo Grove — Walking through the towering bamboo stalks feels otherworldly and is a must-see natural wonder in Kyoto.
