Things to do in Notting Hill

A busy Saturday in Notting Hill along a street with colorful buildings.

Check out the colors!

One of the most striking features of Notting Hill is its visually stunning streetscapes. As you wander through the neighborhood, you'll be greeted by a range of pastel-hued houses adorned with vibrant blooms spilling from window boxes and hanging baskets. Each street seems to have its own unique character, inviting you to explore further and uncover its unique charm. Be courteous, as these are people's homes, but they won't mind a quick, respectful photo.

I recommend starting your day early and taking a leisurely stroll along the picturesque streets. Pause to admire the intricate architectural details, from the ornate doorways to the decorative ironwork that adorns the buildings. Don't forget to capture the essence of Notting Hill through your camera lens, as these photogenic streets provide endless opportunities for memorable snapshots.

One "hidden" gem is the charming Basing Street, a delightful enclave lined with brightly-hued houses and quirky independent shops. Here, you'll find everything from artisanal bakeries to vintage boutiques, each with its own unique character and charm.

Visit the famous Portobello Road Market!

No visit to Notting Hill would be complete without experiencing the iconic Portobello Road Market. This world-renowned market stretches along the vibrant and bustling Portobello Road, offering a treasure trove of delights for every visitor. It will be busy, but planning your trip to Notting Hill around the weekend so you can get a taste of this magical market is well worth it.

As you meander through the market's winding lanes, you'll be greeted by a kaleidoscope of sights, sounds and aromas. Antique dealers, vintage clothing stalls and street food vendors line the streets, creating a lively and eclectic atmosphere that is truly unique to Notting Hill.

I suggest arriving early to beat the crowds and savor the market's authentic vibe. Take your time to browse the stalls, haggle for unique finds and indulge in the mouthwatering street food offerings. From traditional fish and chips to exotic international cuisines, the market's culinary delights are sure to tantalize your taste buds.

Relaxing in the beautiful green spaces of Notting Hill

Amid the bustling streets and cultural attractions, Notting Hill offers a tranquil respite in the form of its beautiful green spaces. These lush parks and gardens provide a serene escape from the city's hustle and bustle, allowing you to recharge and rejuvenate. If you're looking for a garden like that in the film, Notting Hil, you may be disappointed as many of these are private and kept secure under CCTV.

One of my favorite spots is the picturesque Kensington Gardens, which borders the western edge of Notting Hill. Stroll along the winding paths, admire the manicured landscapes and even catch a glimpse of the resident wildlife. Alternatively, you can find a quiet spot on the lush lawns and indulge in a picnic or simply bask in the tranquility of nature.

Watch a movie and time travel

Visit Electric Cinema, an intimate and historic movie theater that offers a truly immersive cinematic experience. It's the perfect place to watch a classic movie or the newest independent movie. It has comfortable seats, art-deco decorations and a menu with tasty snacks and drinks.

Look at pretty pictures

As an art lover, I strongly suggest visiting the area's galleries. They show a wide range of modern and traditional works. From emerging artists to established masters, these galleries offer a unique glimpse into the vibrant art scene of London.

Bookshops

For those with a passion for literature, Notting Hill's independent bookstores are a true delight. Spend an afternoon browsing the shelves, discovering hidden gems and engaging in lively discussions with fellow book lovers. Check out L&R Bookshop for a delightful bit of literary love!

Places to eat & drink in Notting Hill

Core by Clare Smyth is an elegant fine-dining restaurant emphasizing natural, sustainable food.

Beyond the Portobello Road Market, Notting Hill is a veritable foodie paradise. The neighborhood is home to a diverse array of restaurants, cafés and eateries that cater to every palate and preference.

Core by Clare Smyth might be the "best" spot in Notting Hill. The food is nothing short of spectacular with a seasonal, fresh menu with strong nods to vegetables. Smyth has presided over enough Michelin Stars to be called a keeper of a Michelin galaxy! (Three with Gordon Ramsay. Three of her own.)

Sumi is Notting Hill's soft and beautiful ode to classic sushi. With a beautiful and fresh selection that can be enjoyed on a fancy terrace, you really get the best of outdoor dining and the best of sushi in one place. Oh, there's also caviar and wagyu beef for the more classic diner.

Hereford Road is a London special. All of the quality and classic fare of St. John, without a huge wait list. Also, the set lunch might be the best overall deal on London lunches in history.

Trailer Happiness might sound strange, but it's wonderful! With an expansive rum list in a basement tiki bar, to a wonderful. Despite a small menu of bar faves, it is worth a visit for any rum-lover!

Need to know

Whether you're visiting for the first time or you've been there many times, Notting Hill will give you a day full of surprises, cultural experiences and memorable moments. Enjoy the spirit of this famous neighborhood, and let it take you to a world where history, charm, and modern life work together in perfect harmony.
