Things to do in Croatia

A wooden deck with benches facing the sea with a rocky shoreline on a sunny day.

Sibenik

Fly into the Croatian city of Split, and transfer north to the small seaside town of Sibenik. It's less crowded than Split and a more peaceful start to your honeymoon at the D-Resort. This gorgeous property sits at the end of a peninsula overlooking the Mediterranean town of Sibenik. Wake up with coffee in hand on your spacious balcony as you watch the yachts in the marina below. Indulge in their spa and wellness program while you conquer your jet leg. Take their private boat into town for dinner or enjoy a private candlelight dinner on your own.

Split

After you have conquered your jet leg, transfer to the old Roman town of Split, before boarding a private transfer to the island of Hvar. Stop for a cup of coffee and people-watch along Riva Promenade, which spans the length of Split & the Palace.

Hvar

A private water transfer or public ferry will take you to the island of Hvar. Hvar is often called "the sunniest island of Europe." This island has so much to offer. From an old city fortress, charming villages, stunning scenery and a secluded beach. Maslina Resort is a romantic getaway on the north side of the island, near the village of Stari Grad. This exceptional property is everything you would want in a honeymoon location. Rooms, suites or villas are available with gorgeous sea views. Enjoy the wellness center, with a yoga class and couple’s massage before lounging in the sunshine on your own private deck facing the sea. Maslina Resort can arrange lavender tours, wine and olive oil tastings, e-bikes or hikes. This is a perfect location to do as little or as much as you want during your honeymoon.

End your honeymoon in Dubrovnik or Montenegro

Depending on the length of your honeymoon, plan to commence in Dubrovnik or Montenegro. Dubrovnik is known for its historic walls encircling the city, adjacent to the Adriatic Sea. With two elaborate city gates and fifteen forts, a stroll through the city walls is mesmerizing. For a less touristy ending to your honeymoon, head south to Montenegro. This Balkan country is increasing in tourism. So, plan to go before it gets too popular. With five national parks covering over 10% of the country, Montenegro is for those who love the outdoors. Rugged mountains and a beautiful coastline encompass this European gem.

Activities from Sibenik

  • Krka National Park

Krka National Park is a short 20-minute drive from Sibenik. You can spend anywhere from two hours to all day exploring this gorgeous park. It's filled with seven cascading waterfalls and clear water running throughout the trails.

  • Wineries

Croatia is known for its vineyards, and this region is home to the babić grape. Enjoy your time visiting the vineyards, with wine and olive oil tastings and lunch among these ancient wineries.

  • Cathedral and Old Town Tour of Sibenik

Far less touristy than other Croatian towns, the medieval hilltop town of Sibenik sits overlooking a narrow channel of the Adriatic sea. Three episodes of Game of Thrones were filmed in Sibenik. Tour the UNESCO heritage site of St. James Cathedral. Get lost in the narrow alleys and piazzas of this town.

Sites to visit in Split:

  • Diocletian’s Palace

This ancient palace is the main attraction in Split. Built in the third century A.D. and encompasses half of the old time of Split. I recommend a private or small, group tour if you love history and monuments.

  • Cathedral of St. Domnius & Bell Tower

Climb the steps all the way to the top of the bell tower, where you will be rewarded with a spectacular view of Split.

Activities on Hvar Island

  • Lavender Tour

The lavender tours are seasonal from May through mid-July. The best time is mid-June to hike these aromatic fields.

  • Wine Tasting

You will find wineries throughout the island. Private or small, group tours are available.

  • Olive Oil Tasting

Learn about the life of the locals with a tour and tasting of their olive oils.

  • Bike Riding

An unforgettable e-bike adventure through the villages and hills of Hvar.

  • Get out on the Water

We can arrange for a private boat to take you to the Blue Caves or one of the local islands, including Korcula, Brac or Vis.

Places to eat & drink in Croatia

Croatian Foods to Try

  • Oysters

Croation oysters are more flavorful and intense than Altantic oysters. Most varieties come from Ston on Peljesac in Dalmatia.

  • Truffles

Pasta with truffle sauce is a delicious Croatian delicacy.

  • Crni Rizot

You will find this black risotto on almost every menu. It's flavored with squid and other seafood.

  • Gregada

This fish stew is most associated with the island of Hvar. Made fresh each day, often with grouper and sliced potatoes.

  • Fritule

Little battered donut balls filled with yummy rum and raisins and sprinkled with powdered sugar.

  • Rozata

A dessert of cream caramel custard with local ingredients of rose liquor.
