Curator’s statement

You typically hear lots about Santorini but I prefer Milos, Greece. Here's why: It is just as beautiful, if not more so. It is way less crowded so you can actually enjoy your time there. Milos has over 80 beaches so there's plenty of places to relax and enjoy their incredible weather and beautiful scenery. It still has the cutesy culture you imagine when you think of Greece and they have the most amazing food! Besides beaches there are lots of other things to do in Milos such as kayaking, boat tours, shopping, exploring the cute streets or hiking up to some of the most beautiful sunset spots. Plus, the people here are the absolute sweetest people and it is much more affordable than some of the other islands like Santorini.

Things to do in Milos, Greece

Go to a couple of Milos's incredible beaches. There are over 80 beaches here so some of the must-see beaches I'd recommend, in no particular order, are: Sarakiniko, Tsigrado, Firiplaka, Firopotamos, Klima, Mandrakia, Kleftiko, Poliegos, Papagragas and Alogomandra.

Go on a kayaking tour to Gerakas beach. I loved this tour and the guides were so sweet and made the experience so fun.

Take a boat ride to go sightseeing and snorkeling! They also have sailing tours. You could also go at sunset for an amazing experience.

Go shopping at all the cute little local shops! They have the cutest clothes and some fun cultural pieces. The people working are always so nice and helpful—and who doesn't love to support local!

Head to Klima and visit a fishing village. These are so cute and full of life and culture. These are the places you may have seen with the colorful boat-house doors.

Head up to the Church of Panagia Korfiatissa in Plaka for the best sunset spot. It has the most breathtaking view of Milos and is even more spectacular at sunset. It is a great photo op. Do not miss this spot!

Try their local food. There are so many places to eat around the island. I would recommend trying some of the fun, fancier ones along the shore as I'm sure you want to but also try and look for some small local restaurants inland, I promise you'll have a great meal! Definitely ask locals for some of the best spots for certain foods if you're looking for something in particular, everyone is very friendly and wants to help—they love tourists!

Wander through the winding streets and take in the beauty and unique culture! As you probably know, Greek houses are so unique and stunning and it's just fun to wander the streets admiring them and probably getting lost in their winding streets! Don't worry you'll never really be lost. There is lots of history to take in and I'm sure you will stumble across something super cool!

Visit a church. They have so many churches and they are absolutely incredible. They are worth the hike!

Some restaurants that I recommend checking out include: O! Hamos! Tavern, Medusa, Sirocco, Nostos, Yialos, Methismeni Politia and Barriello. I would recommend making reservations ahead of time. I also think it can be fun to ask the locals for some good, smaller restaurants or to just wander inland and find a local joint; they're bound to have incredible food!

Need to know

I recommend renting a car while you are on the island, it will make it much easier to get around. However, roads are not all paved and can be very winding. Also, keep in mind most cars are manual. Taxis can be a great opportunity to ask for local recommendations but they are quite expensive and you need cash.

If you are going during bthe busy season from May to September, I would recommend making reservations at restaurants ahead of time as they can get busy and fill up. I would also recommend getting to the beaches as early in the morning as possible, as they are small and can get crowded. If you are going during othe off-season, you will have lots of room to explore but be aware that there will be a number of restaurants and stores that will not be open.
